Jacob loves playing dress-up, when he can be anything he wants to be. Some kids at school say he can't wear "girl" clothes, but Jacob wants to wear a dress to school. Can he convince his parents to let him wear what he wants? This heartwarming story speaks to the unique challenges faced by boys who don't identify with traditional gender roles.

Banned for upsetting “traditional family values,” this book teaches individuality & support. Jacob wants to wear a dress to school. He faces bullying from his peers, yet he perseveres. The message is great - and I‘m pretty sure the parents‘ reactions of hesitancy then acceptance are genuine (worry for the reactions Jacob will face but support for his decisions) - but the narrative was a little choppy. All the emotions. #BBRC #PictureBook #LetterJ

alisiakae One source of the ban is local for me. Our school district had included this book in their anti-bullying curriculum, and the NC state legislature found out and threatened to pull funding unless it was removed. It was replaced with this one instead 😬 2y
Susanita Ironic that the legislature bullies the school district over the anti-bullying book list. 😧 2y
LibrarianRyan @4thhouseontheleft So don't get me wrong. I like Red. It's a great story, but it's a crayon. Its teaching through metaphor. Jacobs dress is child to child. It sucks that your state leg is ......(redacted). 2y
Librarybelle I scrolled through other posts about the book and saw your post about the local issues, @4thhouseontheleft ! So sad…I‘m still trying to figure out why some of the books are on the lists! @Susanita @LibrarianRyan . 2y

This book is amazing! Jacob just wants to wear a dress and people are not sure what to think. Children will learn understanding, acceptance, friendship, family, and being ok with who you are. I love that I found this in my library and I'm going to make sure we read it a lot! #DiverseKidLit #KidLit #TeachOpenMinds

I would definitely read this book to my future class when talking about diversity. It teaches a great lesson and would definitely help young children understand that people‘s‘ differences should be respected and admired.

Jacob‘s New Dress is a picture book about a boy who loves to wear dresses. The content in this book is very appropriate for the intended age level. The illustrations help to create meaning with the text. They show Jacob being excited to wear dresses and not understanding why others don‘t accept that. Overall, this is a very good book.

I really enjoy this book because it address a real concern in mindedness society. I think it is important to teach kids early on to be themselves despite people trying to tell them who they can/can‘t be. I would definitely use this book in my classroom.

This picture book was written by Sarah and Ian Hoffman and illustrated by Chris Case. It was published by Albert Whitman & Company in 2014. This book is completely relevant to modern times. It is inspiring and full of hope. The illustrations are bright in color and give off a happy glow with each new page. This story is about being true to yourself no matter what. Even if people don‘t understand you.

Illustrated by Chris Case. 2014 picturebook. Great theme showing how boys can wear dresses and how parents should be accepting of their kids likings. Illustrations flow with the page. Jacob is a strong character who stays true to himself despite the backlash he gets.

This part was a very sweet moment between a parent and child in which the parent was letting go and learning to accept their child for who they are!

Published in 2014 and Illustrated by Chris Case. This story touched on content some parents may or may not be comfortable with. I‘d say this story can be appropriate for children who relate to Jacob. It‘s a sweet story that shows children they can be loved and accepted even when they feel different. The biggest character development were Jacobs parents! They truly opened up to the idea of Jacob wearing a dress even if at first they were skeptical.

We have one of the largest school districts in the country (Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools). The school board is voting on a new multiculturalism policy that is more diverse and includes protections based on gender identity.

I‘m watching the live feed from tonight‘s meeting. Public comments, thanks to Flip Benham and the NC Values Coalition, are vile, filled w/ slurs, and frankly, abhorrent.

The tagged book was banned last year over this debate.

tif People make me so mad! I suppose they're afraid that the kids might catch the gay or transgender if they read a book about it 😡 6y
LiteraryinLawrence Oh wow. Stay strong and I hope the board makes the right decision. 6y

TheBookHippie I carry this book with me. It's banned everywhere here. The luxury of being a volunteer 🙌🏻✊🏼 6y
dsfisher NC “Values” are an intolerant group of ignorant toads. And I guess I have to apologize to toads. 6y
Tamra Make your voice and actions heard in whatever way you can! 💪🏾I hadn‘t heard about the book, but now that know it‘s been banned I have to get it. 😼 6y
alisiakae @mjdowens The district was basically forced to withdraw the book last year after veiled threats from the state legislature to cut funding. This is the 2nd attempt to make changes to district policy to expand protections. Hopefully, the vote passes tonight! It‘s about more than a book, but providing a safe environment for ALL students. @TheBookHippie That‘s awesome! I sent George by Alex Gino to a bunch of my electeds last year. 😃 6y
alisiakae @dsfisher 🙌🙌🙌 Exactly. Flip Benham had to be escorted out by police, he actually approached the dais in a very threatening way. It was a level of crazy that was even crazy for him. 6y
alisiakae @Tamra Absolutely!! I wanted to go in person and speak during the public comments period, but hubby is on call tonight and I did not want to expose my daughter to that level of vitriol. But each board member definitely had a call and email from me! 6y
DGRachel I‘m appalled that an organization as bigoted and intolerant as N.C. Values Coalition is allowed to actually use the term “values” in their name. They don‘t represent me. 6y
alisiakae @DGRachel I agree! I have a child in CMS, so I try to stay up to date with what is going on in the district. FYI - the policy change passed. 🎉🎉 6y
xicanti I'm disgusted with these "values" people, but glad to hear the change passed! 6y
BookNAround When my crew were small (also in CMS schools although I only have 1 high schooler left in the system), I purposely carried banned by the school books with me, covers facing out, when I went in for my 3 hour library volunteering every other week. I cheerfully and openly put the books on the counter in the office while I signed in and on the desk in the library while I worked. Not one person had the courage to call me on it. I considered that a win. (edited) 6y
alisiakae @BookNAround 👏👏👏 We are lucky to have a great principal and school librarian who abhor the idea of banning books. Their hands are tied sometimes with what they can buy for the school library, but classroom libraries have no such limits. 😊 6y
CarolynM A version of this "values" in education rubbishy was on the front page of our local newspaper this morning. I do not understand the "value" in being an intolerant ignoramus. 6y

My five-year old son loved this book, and he keeps repeating the line, "There are all sorts of ways to be a boy!" I particularly liked the parents in this book, who hesitate, probably out of a protective instinct, but ultimately support their son. And I loved this kid's confidence.

I picked this up after reading that it was pulled from an anti-bullying curriculum in North Carolina. My 5yo loved it. I loved how the parents were realistically portrayed. They were hesitant at first when their son wanted to wear dresses. I could sense the mom's worry - not that she didn't want to help but that she was concerned at how he would be treated (or maybe I read too much into it.) Ultimately they supported him and so did his teacher.

This is a great way to introduce children to gender nonconformity. Although Jacob's parents accept him, they have trouble with him expressing his feminine side by wearing dresses outside the house. I love how they portray the teacher. It's obvious she doesn't know quite what to do, but she manages to address Jacob's dress wearing in a way that doesn't cause an uproar and doesn't make the situation worse. #DiverseBooks ❤️💛💚💙💜

I'm all about kids doing what they want, gender norms be damned, and this is a great book to convey that sentiment. But the really great thing about it is that it's honest. Not all of the kids are happy about Jacob's fondness for dresses, no matter how good he is at tag or on the monkey bars. They're angry and confused between what the teacher is saying and what their parents are saying. (Continued in Comments)

readinginthedark They tease him and tell him to be on the girls' side of their game. And we even see Jacob's mother hesitate before helping him to make his own dress. But we also see that hesitation dissipate, and we see Jacob's father tell him, "'Well, it's not what I would wear, but you look great.'" This book is ripe for a variety of discussions, but it's also fun! I'll definitely be recommending it to everyone! 7y
