Winter World
Winter World: The Ingenuity of Animal Survival | Bernd Heinrich
7 posts | 6 read | 25 to read
From flying squirrels to grizzly bears, and from torpid turtles to insects with antifreeze, the animal kingdom relies on some staggering evolutionary innovations to survive winter. Unlike their human counterparts, who must alter the environment to accommodate physical limitations, animals are adaptable to an amazing range of conditions. Examining everything from food sources in the extremely barren winter land-scape to the chemical composition that allows certain creatures to survive, Heinrich's Winter World awakens the largely undiscovered mysteries by which nature sustains herself through winter's harsh, cruel exigencies.

KCorter Me too, @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks! They are difficult to find around here. We found two within a few blocks of each other while we were at a new park today. It's my new favorite park! Haha 6y

Pickpick

How organisms survive in the winter.: A lot of things that you don't really think a lot about, such as biorhythms and hibernation that are really very interesting.

JanuarieTimewalker13 I wrote an essay on groundhogs a couple of years back, and they are amazing creatures- they make separate quarters to relieve them selves separate from their living area. So much fun to learn about them. 7y

Everything is covered in a beautiful layer of snow and frost 💙 Beautiful day to go out for a walk. Unfortunately I have to go to work and it will be dark when I get back. There will be other days for walking though I'm sure. Sadly I also have little time for Litsy. But I do have time to look at all your wonderful posts. ❄

Moray_Reads That's beautiful! We had one lovely, frosty, must say yesterday but wintery still doesn't seem to have arrived 7y

We just got lucky with one very cold night. Hoping winter will come to us a bit later because I love winter walks 😊💙❄ 7y

I stack so many books on Litsy! I always get inspirered by all of your lovely posts. Strangly enough I never really check my stacked books to see what books are in there. These are my #laststacked books.

#seasonreadings @RealLifeReading

Kalalalatja I never really check my stacked books either. But somehow they get stuck in my memory, so when I see them in a store I immediately want to buy them 😄 7y
