How About Never--Is Never Good for You?
How About Never--Is Never Good for You?: My Life in Cartoons | Bob Mankoff
6 posts | 6 read | 3 to read
Memoir in cartoons by the longtime cartoon editor of The New Yorker People tell Bob Mankoff that as the cartoon editor of The New Yorker he has the best job in the world. Never one to beat around the bush, he explains to us, in the opening of this singular, delightfully eccentric book, that because he is also a cartoonist at the magazine he actually has two of the best jobs in the world. With the help of myriad images and his funniest, most beloved cartoons, he traces his love of the craft all the way back to his childhood, when he started doing funny drawings at the age of eight. After meeting his mother, we follow his unlikely stints as a high-school basketball star, draft dodger, and sociology grad student. Though Mankoff abandoned the study of psychology in the seventies to become a cartoonist, he recently realized that the field he abandoned could help him better understand the field he was in, and here he takes up the psychology of cartooning, analyzing why some cartoons make us laugh and others don't. He allows us into the hallowed halls of The New Yorker to show us the soup-to-nuts process of cartoon creation, giving us a detailed look not only at his own work, but that of the other talented cartoonists who keep us laughing week after week. For desert, he reveals the secrets to winning the magazine's caption contest. Throughout How About Never--Is Never Good for You?, we see his commitment to the motto "Anything worth saying is worth saying funny."

Pickpick

Would have been done in one night, but you know, life..I was hesitant to pick this title up because I didn't want it to be something politically bias knowing the New Yorker. This was a pleasant surprise for my first memoir and right up my alley with the cartoons. Bob Mankoff has a great dry sense of humor and I found myself laughing throughout. He included some background about himself, but mostly it was focused on the popular New Yorker cartoon.

Pleasantly intrigued by this book so far. Can not put it down and am already almost half way through. Granted...it does have a lot of cartoons in it. Here's to my 1st memoir...and pardon our pillows that are covered in hair.. it's shedding season for this one.

Of course this book was funny. If it wasn't, given the topic, that'd be a serious problem. But it was informative too. For example did you know that this cartoon by Arno (1941) was the first time the phrase "back to the old drawing board" ever appeared and now has become almost cliché? You also learn how (not) to submit a winning entry to The New Yorker caption contest, and other fun stuff.

Finished Peyton Place this morning (wow! Will review later). Now down by the pool with this but hard to read in the sunlight (or anywhere probably) without my most powerful reading glasses 😑 #24in48

Today I signed up for the @24in48 readathon next weekend! I doubt I'll get to read that much but decided I won't emulate this cartoon, and will have fun trying during the 'thon. Thinking about which books -- Mankoff's memoir about being a New Yorker cartoonist will definitely be in to-read pile!

Reviewsbylola I never can hang for the whole time but I feel like this will motivate me to carve out some extra reading time. 8y
ValerieAndBooks @Reviewsbylola so true! Family gets in the way so I'll probably only be active super early and/or super late 😊 8y

ValerieAndBooks @TheLondonBookworm Yes! I'm shopping my shelves for this -- have a lot of TBRs I need to catch up on 😊. 8y
ValerieAndBooks @MMenefee mine too and it's apparently Mankoff's most famous one -- certainly a classic. 8y
