How I Became a Pirate
How I Became a Pirate | Melinda Long
6 posts | 13 read | 1 to read
"Pirates have green teeth when they have any teeth at all. I know about pirates, because one day, when I was at the beach building a sand castle and minding my own business, a pirate ship sailed into view."So proclaims Jeremy Jacob, a boy who joins Captain Braid Beard and his crew in this witty look at the finer points of pirate life by the Caldecott Honor winning illustrator David Shannon and the storyteller Melinda Long. Jeremy learns how to say scurvy dog, sing sea chanteys, and throw food . . . but he also learns that there are no books or good night kisses on board: Pirates don t tuck. A swashbuckling adventure with fantastically silly, richly textured illustrations that suit the story to a T. "

Shiver me Timbers! Jeremy dreams of becoming a pirate, and when he happens upon some pirates one day, he gets his wish. But, is being a pirate everything he wished it to be? Stereotypes of pirates appear in this lighthearted telling. I think the illustrations help to bring out the story. Letter H #PictureBook #BBRC

#Zeke read this next to me. He was purring as I read it aloud (perhaps he wants to be a pirate too!). #CatsOfLitsy

ncsufoxes My oldest (17 years old) loved this book when he was little. He was obsessed with pirates & sharks when he was 3-6. One summer we went to Oracoke Island in NC & we made him a map & he had to search for treasure at the beach. It‘s also the supposed place of where Blackbeard‘s ship sank with all his treasure. 2y
Librarybelle @ncsufoxes That is so cool! What a great connection to a book! 2y
rubyslippersreads If Zeke becomes a pirate, he‘ll probably eat the parrot on his shoulder. 😂🏴‍☠️🦜 2y

How I Became a Pirate is a fantasy book written by Melinda Long and illustrated by David Shannon. It is a cute story of a young boy who becomes a pirate through his imagination while on the beach with his family.

My grandson, Finn, is now 5 and off to kindergarten but when he was 3, he liked to dress up as a pirate.

EadieB @Andrew65 Yes! He is doing good now! 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB That‘s great to hear. It is a big change. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Yes it is and a very necessary one! 6y
Andrew65 What age do your children start at Kindergarten? 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 They have to be 5 before September 1. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Much younger in the U.K. Entitled to 15 hours at age 3 (and these days many working parents entitled to 30 hours) in Nursery and full time education when they are 4 in Reception. Some children from deprived circumstance are also entitled to nursery provision after their second birthday. The September after their fifth birthday they move into year 1. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 He has already been to nursery school. At 3 years he went 2 days a week from 9:00 to 11:30. At 4 years he went 3 days a week from 9:00 to 1130 but totally funded by the parents. His kindergarten is in a public school which goes to 5th grade and funded by taxes. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB All of our nurseries and reception is free, unless you go to a private nursery. We have a nursery within the school. September after 4th birthday children are in from 8.50 to 3.15. Generally nursery is 3 hours a day and we have a morning and an afternoon nursery group. (edited) 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Is your nursery mandatory? Ours is not but most parents send their children to nursery in order to give them a good start for kindergarten. Our kindergarten used to be half days but since most parents work they extended to full days. (edited) 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB No nursery is voluntary but most parents make use of it. Statutory education starts the term after their fifth birthday, although very rare a child doesn‘t attend reception. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Actually, I was just reading online that state law does not make education compulsory till the age of 6. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB That‘s a year later. 6y
EadieB I know! So technically they don‘t really have to attend nursery preschool or kindergarten. But most do except people who don‘t care and then they will actually arrest the parents and put the children in foster care if they are not in school by age 6. (edited) 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB if parents don‘t get children to attend parents are fined, and then can be taken to court and in extreme cases are put in prison. (edited) 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 I have a niece who was homeschooling her 6 children and then put them in public school and got very laxed about making them attend. She was living with her mother and they were both put in jail and her children were put in foster care. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Can never understand people who don‘t value education, so sad. 😢 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 She had a problem with one of her husbands who got custody of 1 of her daughters and because she lost that one she went totally berserk and was hiding her children and that‘s why she didn‘t send them to school. She also lost her nursing job and I was trying to help her and she wouldn‘t listen to me. So she ended up losing all of them. They are all very bright and have come out to be great children in the end. (edited) 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB They are such sad stories! 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 One day she asked me if I would take her 6 children and my husband said ‘no way‘ so they had to go in foster care. She got involved with a Mennonite Church who helped to put her life back together again. I told her that I couldn‘t help her anymore because she wouldn‘t listen to me. If she would have done what I told her to do, she would have never gotten into trouble. (edited) 6y

How I Became a Pirate would make a good RA or even a good LC. Its acute book about how Jeremy Jacob became a pirate and I think it‘d be a good book for children‘s imagination! This book meets UDL 2.1 clarify vocabulary and symbols, of you took out the words you can still read the pictures!

Susancruz It also meets EL 14, simplify speech by making it slower and redundant because it has ‘pirate language‘ ELs might struggle with. The link takes you to a website that offers worksheets you can use with the book. https://bookpagez.com/resource/how-i-became-a-pirate-lesson-plans/ #ucflae3414f17 6y
Samantha.K This looks like a really cute book. I‘ll have to read it someday. The link you provided is awesome with all the worksheets that are available. 6y
Floribelg The illustrations are so vibrant and children always will like a book with appealing features. I think the activities provided in the link could lead toward a dramatic reenactment. 6y
