With every book, Sally Hepworth becomes more and more known for her searing emotional portraits of familiesand the things that test their bonds. In The Mothers Promise, she delivers her most powerful novel yet: the story of a single mother who is dying, the troubled teenaged daughter who is battling her own demons, and the two women who come into their lives at the most critical moment. Alice and her daughter Zoe have been a family of two all their lives. Zoe has always struggled with crippling social anxiety and her mother has been her constant and fierce protector. With no family to speak of, and the identity of Zoes father shrouded in mystery, their team of two worksuntil it doesnt. Until Alice gets sick and is given a grim prognosis. Desperate to find stability for Zoe, Alice reaches out to two women who are practically strangers, but who are her only hope: Kate, her oncology nurse, and Sonja, a social worker. As the four of them come together, a chain of events is set into motion and all four of them must confront their sharpest fears and secretssecrets about abandonment, abuse, estrangement, and the deepest longing for family. Imbued with heart and humor in even the darkest moments, The Mothers Promise is an unforgettable novel about the power of love and forgiveness.

This was a bit slow for me in parts. There were a lot of times where I struggled to stay interested, but I did like the story a lot. Once I realized how all the characters came together, I also liked that aspect, too. I thought it was very interesting that the author brought together mental illness and cancer and showed how crippling both are and the level of support needed for those who suffer from both. Well written and green ending.

Wow. As a mother, I don‘t know what I wouldn‘t do for my boys. We make decisions as parents that we second guess all day long. We wonder if they will become good people. I‘ll admit that I was speechless when I closed this book. I know one day I will leave my boys behind and that day will be heartbreaking.

Not her best! I was excited for this because I loved “the family next door” and “the mother in law” but this wasn‘t really the same vibe. If you like lianne moriarty‘s early stuff this is good! It‘s still easy reading, just not my style

This is an emotional book - cancer, domestic violence, social anxiety, infertility, & substance abuse. On the positive side, there is a strong mother/daughter bond, personal growth, and unlikely friendships. It is a good book, but because of all of the issues covered, will probably hit close to home for many readers.

This read is a love story of a mother and daughter. There are some moments that are triggering, but they are crafted in the story in a way that they are not traumatizing.

Today‘s Prompt: Oh Mother

A mother's love is constant no matter what, and Alice definitely has a mother's never-ending love for her daughter Zoe.

Get out the tissue box as you deal with the characters‘ feelings and make them your own.

I loved this book but boy was it heart wrenching. Such a good story of love between mother and daughter and friendship. I have to admit that I wanted a little more. This is the third book by this author that I‘ve read. I‘m looking forward to her next book being released in April.

This was an emotional read for me and made me ponder what women could accomplish if we allowed each other to share our burdens instead of going it alone...

#2017Book85
This book does a beautiful job of honestly portraying the effects of cancer on both the patient and his or her loved ones. Also covering subjects like anxiety, abuse, love, and family, The Mother's Promise has something for just about everyone. As someone who suffers from anxiety, I could easily relate to many of Zoe's experiences. I've also lost loved ones to cancer, so I understood the fear surrounding Alice's diagnosis.

I met Alice, a single mom who is facing a serious health crisis. Zoe is a teenager, suffering with crippling and embarrassing social anxiety. Kate is a compassionate nurse who is battling infertility. Sonja, a social worker, skilled in the art of helping others, is struggling with changes that need to occur in her life. As Alice, Zoe, Kate and Sonja made choices, they sprouted wings of confidence which led to extraordinary outcomes. Loved it!
