Not a culture, but a genre: classical literature is my favorite so I‘m going to try to find 12 books- one for each month -starting with tagged book for January of classic literature written by non-white authors.

#integrateyourshelf

Adding this to my already diversity in reading of cultures misrepresented by our school libraries and getting the accurate book instead

GingerAntics I already started this, kind of, but I have always had an interest in indigenous cultures. I just got a book on sale about the removal of indigenous peoples from my home state. The subtitle is calling it Minnesota‘s most significant historical moment. I learned nothing about it in school. (edited) 3y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics starting with little house on the prairie is not a tale on the times it‘s fiction and and unfortunately very racist when talking about Indians . So many books get removed for idiotic things but they leave very harmful history as they see it books. Especially on indigenous people. 3y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie I can‘t stand those books. The Birchbark House series is a much better alternative and is actually interesting. I remember having to read the little house books in school and they all moved SO slow. 3y

TheBookHippie @GingerAntics that‘s what I use Birchbark- it‘s so much better. 3y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie on every level it‘s so much better. It serves the same purpose, but it also opens up discussion and exploration of an undiscussed (under discussed in the best circumstances) culture. I had the benefit of learning a lot about native Americans, but I still never heard about what‘s in that book. I‘m excited to learn more. 3y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie I listened to the first Birchbark book on audiobook, but I haven‘t read the rest. This year might be a good time to finish the series. If the rest of Louise Erdrich‘s books are anything like that series, I‘m a fan. I quite enjoyed Stephan Graham Jones, as well. 3y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics kids like her books a lot. It‘s a 3rd grade requirement here to learn about local tribes but many right wing religious people have done a huge disservice by teaching it incorrectly. I believe the tribes should give us what to teach. Barring that finding correct history to teach and stories is my goal 3y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie I completely agree. I‘m sorry, but the right wing Christian story is “they were heathens and we saved them. You‘re welcome.” 🤦🏼‍♀️ That absolutely should NOT be what‘s taught. Ugh. 3y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics 🤮🤮🤮🤮agree 3y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie we were actually taught some of the authorities (the beatings and the cultural genocide, not the sexual abuse by we were just in 5th grade) of the boarding schools. We learned the year before that not all/very few native Americans lived in teepees. So I got more of an education than most. 3y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics I had a friend from the Chippewa Tribe she taught me the truth. School taught nada, other than the we saved them bs 3y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie oh good grief. 🤦🏼‍♀️ That doesn‘t surprise me, honestly. It‘s just one more way they were set up to fail, and then when they did, it was because they “didn‘t try hard enough.” 🤦🏼‍♀️🤢🤮 3y

Pickpick

Phillis Wheatley was a talented poet whose work holds up next to any of her contemporaries. Goliath of Gath makes for an interesting poetic narrative of a classic biblical tale. Be sure to let us know your thoughts. You can read our full review in the link. #litereads #blackhistorymonth #bhm

This week's #litereads pick is Goliath of Gath by Phillis Wheatley, our first ever poetry selection! We want to know your thoughts.

What do you think of her style? Was it what you expected going into it?

What did you think of the biblical content and the way she used her poetry to narrate this story?

How does this compare to other poetry you have read? Does it hold up next to other classic or modern poetry you have read?

Phillis Wheatley was the first African-American woman to become a published author with the publication of her poetry collection in 1773, while she was still an enslaved woman. Goliath of Gath is one of the poems included in this collection. You can find resources to read the poem in our intro article below. Be sure to let us know what you think!

If you haven't been to the National Museum of African American History, go as soon as you get a chance! It's so powerful, and such a celebration of Black history and culture. This statue of Phillis Wheatley is juxtaposed with the bricks that bear the names of Thomas Jefferson's children who he allowed to continue to be enslaved.

Wheatley's writing was both beautiful and subversive, and she should be celebrated more.

Nute I'm waiting for the day! 5y

Thy various works, imperial queen, we see,
How bright their forms! how deck'd with pomp by thee!
Thy wond'rous acts in beauteous order stand,
And all attest how potent is thine hand.

I had to go historical for #ToBeYoungGiftedandBlack . Phillis Wheatley is recognized as the first African American poet in the US. She was a slave who received her free papers upon the publication of her poetry. She died fairly young, destitute. Such a sad story for such a gifted poetess. #FierceFeb

batsy I wasn't aware of this... Thank you for sharing! 6y
