They Say, I Say really conveys the style of academic writing. I've used this book to teach first-year writing. The authors explain basic skills like quoting, summarizing, and refuting others' arguments.

BookishMarginalia @LiteraryinLititz It's a really accessible guide to academic writing as a conversation between sources, and between writers. It uses frames (aka templates) to help students understand how to use evidence, introduce opposing points, and advance arguments. This edition also has many excellent essays with useful questions to facilitate "joining the conversation." The other edition is:
