From the host of MTV's #1 show Catfish comes the definitive guide about how to connect with people authentically in today's increasingly digital world.IN REAL LIFE: Love, Lies & Identity in the Digital Age As the host of the wildly popular TV series Catfish which investigates online relationships to determine whether they are based on truth or fiction (spoiler: it's almost always fiction). Nev has become the Dr. Drew of online relationships. His clout in this area springs from his own experience with a deceptive online romance, about which he made a critically acclaimed 2010 documentary (also called Catfish). In that film Nev coined the term "catfish" to refer to someone who creates a false online persona to reel someone into a romantic relationship. The meme spread rapidly. Now Nev brings his expertise to the page, sharing insider secrets about:-what motivates catfish-why people fall for catfish-how you can avoid being deceived-rules for dating -- both online and off-how to connect authentically with others over the internet-how to turn an online relationship into a real-life relationship ...and much, much more.Peppered throughout with Nev's personal stories, this book delves deeply into the complexities of online identity. Nev shows us how our digital lives are affecting our real lives, and provides essential advice about how we should all be living and loving in the era of social media.

3.5🌟story 5🌟narration So this is a call to action to get off social media, so I'm posting about it on social media. (Hey, people, we need some levity today. 😅) It's aimed at people in their teens and 20s to get them to spend more time off their phones & engaged with real world people. I'm older than the target demographic. I put down my phone for hours at a time! I did enjoy the stories about Nev's life & the behind the scenes dirt on Catfish.

Notafraidofwords Did he talk about his alcohol use or abuse or depression? 7y
shanebeth I ❤️ Nev! 7y

BookishFeminist Nev's awesome. Haven't read this yet but I'm a fan of his. I also put my phone down for hours at a time even though I'm totally within the target demographic. It's helpful. Social media (depending on how and why you use it) can be helpful too. Sometimes it's nice to feel less isolated. 🙂 7y
Megabooks @Notafraidofwords He talked about his acting out, ADHD, going to therapy, womanizing, and family relations. But no alcohol use or depression specifically. It tried to take a look at the positive changes he's made in his life post catfish the movie. 7y
Megabooks @BookishFeminist He talks about having a balance of time on social media/phone and true real life friends and interactions. He also talks about changing aspects of your life that make you feel less confident. Making changes to be the person you want to be or pretend to be online. 7y
Megabooks @shanebeth Check it out! 7y
Notafraidofwords Oh okay. Awesome. 7y
BookishFeminist @Ebooksandcooks 💪🏼💪🏼 that's the way to do it. Heck yes, Nev! 7y

I've been binge-watching Catfish on Hulu since reading Schulman's book for the #BookishOlympics. Confession - I'm kind of embarrassed by how much I tear up while watching the show 😳

I liked this book more than I expected to. He writes about his catfish experience, making the show, his personal life and the changes he's made to be a better person. He also provides tips/advice for online relationships. I enjoyed reading Nev's personal reflections.

Roselyn_Reads So cool! I didn't know he had a book out. I watch Catfish all the time. (I also tear up a lot) 8y
Megabooks I binge watched the first 2.5 seasons awhile back. I'll have to check out the book. Thanks! 8y
[DELETED] 3803335244 Sometimes I can't fathom how people don't know. I mean come on, Katy Perry? Really? And the fact that they invest so much into a person for years they have never met. I love the show. I can understand some being fooled but others in like what? Do you think some fake it just to get on the show? 8y

BekahB @AustenNerd16 there's actually 1 episode where the couple intentionally acts like its a catfish situation so they can get a plane ticket to see each other. I think some of them have a clue but they really don't want to believe it and then some are completely caught by surprise. In the book Nev talks about how he should have seen the red flags in his own situation but he just didn't want to believe it. It's pretty amazing what people will ignore. 8y
[DELETED] 3803335244 Oh, I need to watch that one! I agree, I think people ignore way to much in life. 8y
shanebeth This show is my biggest guilty pleasure. 🐱🐟 8y
RadicalReader @BekahB I love watching catfish loved the one of Derek who was exactly who he says he was and the girl couldn‘t believe it “ I am in Derek‘s driveway!” 7y

I finished my last book for the #bookisholympics late last night. I had to switch out some books from my original list to make sure I got through 7 books. Here's how my reading panned out:

My favorite was definitely Shrill. It's fantastic! The Spindlers, The DUFF, and Sherlock Holmes and the Servants of Hell were also great reads! Escape from Asylum and In Real Life were both pretty good. Darkwater was just ok.

And now my brain needs a break. 😄

OSChamberlain Lol. Definitely need a break. I was left reeling and with my eyes stinging. 8y
Zelma Sound like a good time to watch tv or spend time outdoors (without a book). Recharge time! 8y

BekahB Thanks @MrBook, @Texreader, @SusaninTiburon, @Eyelit, @CherylDeFranceschi, and @shanebeth! I think that's the most I've read in a week since college! 😄 8y
Chessa Nice work! I'm basically dragging out Shrill forever because I never want it to end. It is so good! 8y
BekahB @Chessa I know! Someone needs to publish a book of all her articles or she needs to write another book soon...or something! I might just do an online dive into everything she's written 😀 8y
