In her debut picture book, Misty Copeland tells the story of a young girl--an every girl--whose confidence is fragile and who is questioning her own ability to reach the heights that Misty has reached. Misty encourages this young girl's faith in herself and shows her exactly how, through hard work and dedication, she too can become Firebird.Lyrical and affecting text paired with bold, striking illustrations that are some of Caldecott Honoree Christopher Myers's best work, makes Firebird perfect for aspriring ballerinas everywhere.

I didn‘t know what I was getting myself in to when I opened this book. Such a phenomenal read that shook me to my core. From the short sentences without much structure to the captivating illustrations to the story that inspires generations - this book is everything anyone will ever need.

This book was an inspirational story about a ballerina and her idol. She starts off thinking they are nothing alike and that she will never reach her level of greatness but the dancer said that she was once like her. She said it takes hard work to be were she‘s at but they started in the same place

#AbbaInAugust Day 13: Misty Copeland is the unparalleled #DancingQueen, the first African American woman named principal dancer in the American Ballet Theatre Company. Unlike other picturebook biographies that are filled with factual information, this is Misty‘s response to a dispirited young girl who seems to feel that her dreams are a universe away. Happy National Library week! Misty Copeland is the honorary chair this year and I‘m looking forward to reading her book, Firebird, this Wednesday during storytime. I‘m also looking forward to asking the kids what the library means to them. #nlw18 #librarylife

This inspiring F, Coretta Scott King award winning book tells the story of a young girl who is questioning her ability to accomplish the things that Misty Copeland has. Misty shows the young girl the importance of hard work and dedication. She can too become the Firebird. #ucflae3414f17

KayleeC After reading the book, I would have my students watch the documentary on Misty Copeland so they can get a deeper understand of who she is and all that she had to overcome https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqZkfDEoQDI
ESOL strategy 9 teach note-taking strategies: T-lists, time lines etc. and UDL principle 5.1 Use multiple media for communication could be met by this book.

I need to thank my sister for letting me borrow this book. It is a wonderful book that talks about never giving up on your dreams. This RF has many ways to be included in the classroom that could help with teaching about going for your dreams and never giving up. This book won two awards: the Corretta award and the Ezra Jack Keats Honor book. #ucflae3414f17

dakotap I would use EDL 1.3, Offer alternatives for visual information. I would use this because since it is a big book and the drawings are the main parts of the book I would try to help my students see what they're listening to. I would also use ELL 17, provide contextual support through audiovisuals, models, demonstrations, body language and facial expressions, because it would go along with my EDL 1.3 6y

This fiction Ezra and Corretta Scott King award winner picture book is an amazing book. I will definitely use this book in my classroom and I chose it because I am a dancer and Misty Copeland is one of my idols! I would use this as an author study in my classroom. I will use an AS because I want my students to do research on Misty to see how amazing she is. After we read the book I will show my students her documentary https://youtu.be/BqZkfDEoQDI

MakennaK I would use ELL 7, show students how to use graphic organizers. This will be used to help them write information about Misty. I will use UDL 5.1, use multimedia for communication, since I will show them her video documentary! I love Misty Copeland so I hope I can get my students to love her as well. #ucflae3414f17 6y
DominiqueL I love choosing books that not only the students will like but also I could connect with. One book I would show to my class was also introduced to me in the 3rd grade and the author was a local author in my hometown. I feel like our excitement about the books we share will definitely inspire them as well! 6y

The winner of the 2015 Coretta Scott King award, Firebird tells the story of a young girl–an every girl–whose confidence is fragile and who is questioning her own ability to reach the heights that Misty Copeland has reached. I think this book would be great for RT and it would give students a chance to see that they too, can accomplish their dreams

AlexaDP I think the ESOL strategies, 20, listing the the most important words and phrases you use or plan to use in a presentation on a transparency or on the chalkboard, 23, giving enough wait time for second language learners to respond to questions, and 24, incorporating the culture and the language of second language learners in your curriculum. 6y
AlexaDP For the UDL strategies, I think that 3.1, activate or supply background knowledge, 5.1, use multiple media for communication. 6y
AlexaDP https://www.adl.org/sites/default/files/documents/assets/pdf/education-outreach/... this link takes you to a PDF of a lesson plan that teachers can use for different grades that teach students about stereotypes, and role models #ucflae3414f17 6y
juliek1 This sounds like a great book specifically for young girls who need some guiding light. The picture caught my eye! 6y
