Rebel Mechanics
Rebel Mechanics: All Is Fair in Love and Revolution | Shanna Swendson
It's 1888, and seventeen-year-old Verity Newton lands a job in New York as a governess to a wealthy leading familybut she quickly learns that the family has big secrets. Magisters have always ruled the colonies, but now an underground society of mechanics and engineers are developing non-magical sources of power via steam engines that they hope will help them gain freedom from British rule. The family Verity works for is magisterbut it seems like the children's young guardian uncle is sympathetic to the rebel cause. As Verity falls for a charming rebel inventor and agrees to become a spy, she also becomes more and more enmeshed in the magister family's life. She soon realizes she's uniquely positioned to advance the causebut to do so, she'll have to reveal her own dangerous secret.

1. Alternate History! I love history but I always think “what if?”
2. I tagged Rebel Mechanics which is a YA story exploring the American Revolution happening 100 years later and involving magic. Of course there is also the Thursday Next series by Jasper Fforde which is absolutely excellent.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This story was so unique. I don‘t think I have ever read anything like it. The plot was very unique Verity Newton is very refreshing. This was an interesting take on the American Revolution. This story had it all for me-history, adventure, mystery, romance & my fav magic. I am interested to see what happens next. Now I only wish that I paid more attention to the author talk at a book festival a couple years back. {continued in comments}

Lollymya I am interested to see what happens next. Now I only wish that I paid more attention to the author talk at a book festival a couple years back. The fact that this author was able to take a part of history and tell in a way that is so different and interest is pretty great if you ask me. Brava....

....happy reading!!! #litsylove #bookspin @TheAromaofBooks

This story was so fresh and different. To think of something so know and flip it on its head to show a much different perspective/reality. I had the pleasure of meeting the author. She completed hooked me to get this book.

Really excellent follow up to book one. I can‘t wait to read the next one. Verity is a little wiser and bolder in her rebel activity! I adore this series. A little predictable at time but overall great fun.

What fun! Espionage and romance. Steampunk and revolution. What‘s not to like? A little predictable but thoroughly enjoyable. 4/5

What if British magic kept the American Revolution from ever occurring?
So far, I'm enjoying the story!!

Steampunk has become a favorite sub-genre of mine. Pair that with a little magic, some alternative history, and a bubbling revolution and that's where you'll find this. Smartly written, this feels very light when reading but it's tackling some big topics at the same time. I'm very much looking forward to cracking open the next line!

Bookstagram likes its red, white, and blue books on the Fourth. It's the prompt for two challenges I'm following this month - #icecreamforbooks and #AllTheBooksJuly. (I accidentally hit the #bookbabesjuly prompt by including WIRES & NERVE for blue, which is the graphic novel companion of the Lunar Chronicles.) I'm not particularly patriotic, though, and am spending my day at home organizing. But red, white, and blue books do look nice together.

I really enjoyed Rebel Mechanics. Alternate reality, steampunk, magic, a clever heroine, and so much more! This book definitely hit the "escape" I've been needing. Now on to the second book in the series!

Mehso-so

The first chapter was so promising. It's promise was what kept me reading. Unfortunately, it just fell flat. An odd love triangle (or sort of triangle?), rapid and convenient placed plot development, and characters that had no real depth or anything to distinguish them as memorable. Disclaimer: I may be severe in judging because I came off of two amazing YA series that took me on great reading adventures. #ya #meh #ontothenext #booktober #rebel
