The Reapers
The Reapers: A Charlie Parker Thriller | John Connolly
12 posts | 15 read | 9 to read
A brilliantly chilling novel by New York Times bestselling author John Connolly about a chain of killings, linked obscurely by great distances and the passage of years, and the settling of their blood-debts -- past, present, and future. As a small boy, Louis witnesses an unspeakable crime that takes the life of a member of his small, southern community. He grows up and moves on, but he is forever changed by the cruel and brutal nature of the act. It lights a fire deep within him that burns white and cold, a quiet flame just waiting to ignite. Now, years later, the sins of his life are reaching into his present, bringing with them the buried secrets and half-forgotten acts of his past. Someone is hunting him, targeting his home, his businesses, and his partner, Angel. The instrument of revenge is Bliss, a killer of killers, the most feared of assassins. Bliss is a Reaper, a lethal tool to be applied toward the ultimate end, but he is also a man with a personal vendetta. Hardened by their pasts, Louis and Angel decide to strike back. While they form a camaraderie that brings them solace, it offers them no shelter from the fate that stalks them. When they mysteriously disappear, their friends are forced to band together to find them. They are led by private detective Charlie Parker, a killer himself, a Reaper in waiting. Connolly's triumphant prose and unerring rendering of his tortured characters mesmerize and chill. He creates a world where everyone is corrupt, murderers go unpunished, but betrayals are always avenged. Yet another masterpiece from a proven talent, The Reapers will terrify and transfix.

Fri night pizza, wine and Angel + Louis in their story what a perfect end to the week. I loved learning more about Louis's early life as his past crimes come back to haunt him with another great villain Bliss. Another character in the bk Willie and arno, whose relationship is characterised w great dialogue. And with an intro in which the author tells of a man who buys 10 copies for his gay book club because of angel and Louis what is not to like.

TrishB Great pic. Sadly I‘m up to date with this series. Great writing and stories. 2y

#BookSpinBingo @TheAromaofBooks Trying to squeeze in as many for my December board as I can by tomorrow.

Book 7 in the Charlie Parker series just might be one of my favorites. I'm a fan of Louis and Angel and they both play a big part in this story that mixes a racial crime from the past with a current mystery that Parker must solve. Connolly never disappoints. Each book gets even better in this series.

Another great one in this series. Mainly about Angel and Louis , but Charlie comes in at the end. Learn a lot more about Louis‘s childhood. Love this series and I‘m trying not to rush through so I know I‘ve always got a few there ready.
We‘re not talking about the sticker though.

cathipink This isn't based upon Charlie Parker the musician, is it? 5y
TrishB @cathipink no it‘s not, though he does get called Bird as a nickname! 5y
Cathythoughts Great review! Must get back to these great characters 5y

After stumbling upon a Charlie Parker novel midway through the series, I found myself on ThriftBooks ordering every single one of the books so that I could read them in order. I love this series!

LiteraryLona This one focused more on Louis and Angel, not a lot of Parker. It was still good though! 5y

#FavLiteraryCouple #HeartsandHardcovers I love Louis and Angel from John Connolly‘s Charlie Parker series. They are total opposites from fashion to music to food. But they have so much love for each other. They also add some great comic relief in these, sometimes, very dark books 💕

John Connolly is fantastic! This turned out to be a reread as I started to remember I had read it, but loved it as much as I did the first time

So this is showing as unread on Goodreads, but I know I‘ve read books after this so it‘s really stressing me. Started last night and a lot of it familiar. So good chance that I‘ve read it but will keep going anyway

#maybookflowers #supernaturalmysteries John Connolly is one of my favourite thriller authors . I love his touch of the supernatural throughout his Charlie Parker series, genius! ❤️📚

andrew61 He is definitely a writer i want to try, the podcast 'two crime writers and a microphone' regularly sings his praises and I've found some gr8 crime recommendations there. 7y
DeborahSmall @andrew61 although Irish his books are set in Portland, Maine. The settings for his books are spectacular. Most are pretty gruesome and dark with such beautiful prose, that you forget that it's a modern thriller you're reading. Angel and Louis a mismatched couple that offer the much needed comic relief. I think I'm up to book 9 or 10 and I know I've got mixed up in the order. As long as you read the first 3/4 in order you can jump about. 7y
andrew61 @DeborahSmall thanks Deborah, I'll definitely be looking for book no1 asap , with crime fiction i prefer to start at the beginning so you follow the characters all the way through. I need a spread sheet to work out which series and detective im reading at any one time !! :) 7y

#bestsidekick has to be Charlie Parker's buddies, Louis & Angel. How good are they? They got their own book in the series! They're great foils to Parker & to each other. Each is a surprise in his own right. Together, they can boggle your mind.
Pick up this series, starting with Every Dead Thing, for a spooky supernatural noir ride over 14 installments (so far😊), and meet the two best friends a person could ever have.

I am a huge Charlie Parker fan and love John Connolly's supernatural crime series. While I have a bit of a character crush on Parker 😍 his best friends Louis and Angel are fantastic and a huge part of why I love these books. They are opposites of each other but I'd love to have a drink with them and listen to their stories 😆 #booktober #octphotochallenge #literarybestfriends
