Emilia and Teo's lives changed in a fiery, terrifying instant when a bird strike brought down the plane their stunt pilot mothers were flying. Teo's mother died immediately, but Em's survived, determined to raise Teo according to his late mother's wishesin a place where he won't be discriminated against because of the color of his skin. But in 1930s America, a white woman raising a black adoptive son alongside a white daughter is too often seen as a threat. Seeking a home where her children won't be held back by ethnicity or gender, Rhoda brings Em and Teo to Ethiopia, and all three fall in love with the beautiful, peaceful country. But that peace is shattered by the threat of war with Italy, and teenage Em and Teo are drawn into the conflict. Will their devotion to their country, its culture and people, and each other be their downfall...or their salvation? In the tradition of her award-winning and bestselling Code Name Verity, Elizabeth Wein brings us another thrilling and deeply affecting novel that explores the bonds of friendship, the resilience of young pilots, and the strength of the human spirit.

Elizabeth Wein. Really, that should be all you need to know. She flies planes and writes about strong women flying planes. She pulls no punches, and like Joss Whedon, people get hurt and even die. Why aren‘t you reading her work?

Pickpick

I would have never chosen this book on my own. Pilots and War in Ethiopia? Sounds depressing. My favorite librarian recommended it when I need something on CD so I decided to give it a listen. After all it was Elizabeth Wein. I LOVED IT! Wonderful brother/sister relationship. Adventure, bravery when you are scared. So good!

Beautiful observation on grief.

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I loved Code Name Verity - will have to check this out! 8y
UltraVioletRosie This spoke to me....I know, a grieving mother is always broken even when she seems to be together. 8y
maximoffs @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled.com my expectations were low a lot of people DNFed this but I really find it beautiful so far. @UltraVioletRosie so much love to you ❤️❤️❤️ 8y

"I love that phrase: soul mate. We asked Grandma what it meant and she said, 'Two people who understand each other without talking about it. Two halves of a whole.'
'Like being married?' I asked.
'No,' Grandma said. 'It could be anybody. Father or mother or sister or friend. A teacher or someone you work with. Anybody. Any two people who understand each other so well that one of them can fly blindfolded and the other will stand unafraid."

Yournewfriendsams This is really beautiful. 8y

Big fan of Code Name Verity. The rest of the books from this library trip have failed me. Let's hope this doesn't and lives up to this writers amazingness.

hufflepuff_librarian Would love to know your thoughts on this one. Sadly, it was a DNF for me, which killed me bc I'm a big fan of her other stuff too. 8y
maximoffs @kinder_teach oh no!!! That was my pattern most of yesterday and I was hoping this would break it. We will see! 8y
