Out of the 14 recommendations, I had already read 2 and finished 3 more this month. Given my love of historical fiction, I was surprised this one wasn't on my list yet so thank you for another solid suggestion.

Maria514626 So glad you liked it! I need to update my list. It‘s a good one! 🥳 1y

A good debut but lacking the depth that I've seen in stronger works of historical fiction.

Book 2/14 for #14books14weeks2021

TheHeartlandBookFairy Pretty cover ,😁 3y
janeycanuck @TheHeartlandBookFairy it is, isn‘t it? 3y
MsMelissa I enjoy Robson‘s books, but agree they lack the depth necessary to make me love a work of historical fiction. I think her more recent books are her best, and hope she just keeps getting better. 3y
janeycanuck @MsMelissa I‘ve only read one other by her - The Gown - but it was much better than this one. It‘s nice to see she‘s growing as an author. 3y

3.5⭐ - I really liked this book. Not so much due to the Historical Fiction aspect of it, because that wasn't the focus, but the backdrop. The romance and other circumstances surrounding the protagonist just kept drawing me in! I really loved how she responded to adversity and trials - {{{more review in comments}}}

bg_reads I hope I can be mature enough to not react based on feelings but from a stance of truth one day. She did that beautifully! I took away 0.5 star rating due to the elaborate sex scene, since I'm not fond of reading them. When they're pages long, it's just too much for me to let slide without changing the rating. Overall, a good read! Best of the year, I'd say! 😉 5y

I just want to sit and read... It's gotten to the point that I'm thinking of this book throughout the day... Wondering how everything will develop and where the storyline will take the characters. With the uncertainty of war as a backdrop to this love story, I'm enamored over this book.
Side note - does anyone get the pretzel reference? Know where it came from? 🥨

Beatlefan129 I wake up every morning in a bed that‘s too small, drive my daughter to a school that‘s too expensive, and then I go to work to a job for which I get paid too little. But on pretzel day? Well, I like pretzel day.—Stanley 5y

Staying away from all the chaos that goes along with the city of Las Vegas this New Year's Eve and am tucked in bed reading my book. Unfortunately my arms are really tired from holding this book open... It's getting good, though, so I need to suffer through it, I think! 🙂

Man, I have the hardest time reading mass paperbacks. The font is so small and the binding is so tight! My wrists get sore just trying to hold the book open.... I'm enjoying this book so far, though! Though I should have paid attention to what I was buying (online) and noticed it was a mass paperback version. 😥

Crazeedi I have the same problem. I try not to buy, but a couple times they slipped in without me realizing! They are very difficult 5y

An easy read about a spirited young lady who joins the WWI efforts as an ambulance driver. Warning - the lovemaking scene is horribly cheesy. #mountTBRchallenge

benchley1 People underestimate how hard a good sex scene is to write! 6y

A nice historical fiction/romance novel. A bit predictable, but lovely storytelling makes it worth reading. And it sheds light on the sacrifices made by so many young people during World War I.

Melissa_J I enjoyed this too. I‘ve read all of Robson‘s books and this one is my favourite. 6y
CoverToCoverGirl In my TBR pile somewhere! 😏 6y

Wow, this book was so great! It's about Lilly who all she wants to do is help out with World War I and be an ambulance driver. It has some romance in it as well. Such an engaging story that I couldn't put down! I read it in barely 2 days!

Wonderful book about a woman trying to gain her independence during a time that a woman's independence was frowned upon! Amazing book, about to dive into the second book!!

A very well-paced, compelling tale of love between classes in a fully realized WWI setting. Robson's depictions of the horrors of life as a field surgeon and an ambulance driver on the front are unflinching without crossing into gratuitous violence.
