I had breakfast this morning with a titled bisexual scoundrel who is doing his Grand Tour with his best friend, an illegitimate biracial orphan with epilepsy. And with whom he is hopelessly in love. I love what you can do in YA that would never fly in an adult novel from a major house.

This book just about killed me. Make sure your Klonopin prescription is filled before you pick it up.

I'm only one chapter in and already so grateful to Hida Viloria for sharing he/r very personal, very important story. If you are looking to explode the gender binary, Born Both is a great place to start.

Sometimes you start reading a book because everyone says it's amazing and you don't read the flap copy and have basically no idea what it's about and then 25 pages in your jaw is dropping and you finally realize what you are in for with this book.

FINALLY getting to this much anticipated galley. I adored every word of Female Chauvinist Pigs, and every New Yorker piece of Ariel Levy's I've read. I remember seeing her gorgeous wedding announcement in the Times, and I'm dreading seeing that fall apart but I know it will be beautiful.

Pickpick

I don't read a lot of middle grade, but this one drew me in. It's historical adventure set in NYC in 1942, just after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. But the real selling point to me was that it involves a scavenger hunt (!) in the Metropolitan Museum (!!), and the Arthurian legend (!!!). As a bonus, there are timely representations of prejudice based on race or religion. I hope the final cover doesn't feature the 2 white kids so prominently.

I have been waiting for this book for over 10 years. I might read it and listen to it simultaneously.

Ok, October, you win. I'm retreating to Discworld for the duration.

Conclave | Robert Harris

Pickpick

Robert Harris has been my favorite suspense writer for the last decade. Conclave tells the story of the election of a new Pope, complete with all the scandals and intrigue we have come to expect from the Catholic Church. Impeccably researched, beautifully written, and a pace that picks up exponentially.

Iron Cast | Destiny Soria

I love when you see a book in edelweiss and think "that looks interesting!" and then hear other booksellers saying how much they liked it and then you read it AND IT'S AS GOOD AS YOU'D HOPED! Iron Cast is historical fantasy YA that hits on themes of immigration, race, class, and politics. I especially loved the way subcultures and minority communities are treated.
