As this novel embarks upon the race riot, which took place in Tulsa, Oklahoma, students travel from the present to the past, trying to find out whose body was buried behind Rowan‘s home.

Although my classes are at different parts in this book, we all know that a body from 100 years ago has been found and right now, we don‘t like William nor Vernon. Thank you Jennifer Latham for writing a novel that has captivated my students.

Dying For Revenge | Eric Jerome Dickey
post image

I was reading Dying for Revenge with the Reading Girlfriends Instagram book club, and I thought that I would never finish it; I did. I read this book over my entire fall break, and I wanted to finish it before the break was over. When I went to bed last night, I only had 181 pages left to read. Well, I woke up at 4:00 this morning with this book on my mind. I picked it up and started reading it. I was determined to finish it, and I did.

Reading Organization

I have many composition notebooks and legal pads with notes for my book reviews. However, this system is organized chaos. In need of a new system, I found these two items on Amazon.com: one to keep the notes on books that I will read and the other for the book club of which I am a member. I am excited to have these journals; now my organized chaos can be an organized system.

This is the true story of Emmanuel Ofosue Yeboah. Read about how he did not let his disability define him. Instead, he defined his disability. Read about how he became the man of the house to take care of his family when they needed him, despite having a disability. Read about how he had no friends at school. But that quickly changed; not only did he gain many friends but also he was well-respected. Full review on my blog.

Therefore, I encourage you to take a break and unplug your devices because these jokes will make you laugh. Remember, laughing is therapeutic. I like how this book allows readers to analyze their personalities to help students make a wise choice concerning their future career path. For example, on page 24, Flath identifies and explains five different personalities to help readers to decide the best career option for them. There is nothing worse than a person having a job that he or she absolutely despises. Please the full book review on my blog at https://alwaysforeverreading.blog

This novel took me on a rollercoaster ride. There were plenty of ups and downs as I read this story. In fact, there were moments when I said, “Awww!” But there were other moments when I said, “OMG!” Then, there were times, when I simply said, “Dang! or “For real!” Yet, there were times when I was completely sad. In addition, to add to your emotions, there will be characters that you love, and will not love as much, if at all. Full review on blog.

The year is 1965, and Miss Lillian is finally going to cast her first, official vote. On her way to the polls, she thinks about the trials and tribulations of not only her ancestors but also those of other African Americans. These thoughts make her even more determined to vote. This picture book is an excellent way to teach children about African Americans‘ struggle to vote.

This picture book tells the story of Miss Lillian, an African American woman, who is determined to exercise her right to vote. What makes her right to vote so special is Miss Lillian‘s age; she is 100-years-old. On her way to vote, Ms. Lillian thinks about her ancestors and the adversity they faced. This a five-star read for children.

Through Goodreads, I am a member of the Black Coffee community. In January 2021, our group read Deesha Philyaw‘s novel, The Secrets Lives of Church Ladies. I was really excited to read this collection of short stories. Although there were a few short stories that I enjoyed reading, I am not able to say that I loved the book. Therefore, I encourage you to read the book to determine your feelings about it.

Freeman allows his readers to clearly understand the racial dynamics between whites and blacks during the time in which these murders occurred. Also, the way Freeman describes these murders are quite vivid but not in a good way. The details are horrific, and heartbreaking. In fact, I almost stopped reading this novel, but I was determined to finish it. If you want to learn about a hidden piece of history, then this novel is for you.

This novel deals with the themes of friendship, acceptance, love, race, and loyalty. The way Lee addresses these themes will make you think about the dynamics of life. In fact, it may make you think about your own life. If you want to read a great novel that will keep you turning the pages, then read The Scars We Choose because you will not be disappointed.

By day, Superman is Clark Kent; Incognegro is Zane Pinchback. Clark Kent works for the Daily Planet as a reporter; Zane Pinchback is a reporter for the New Holland Herald. Just as Superman has special powers, so does Incognegro. However, Incognegro's power allows him to report gruesome details about the lynchings of African Americans, while being black. Due to his skin complexion, he has the ability to “pass” as a white man.
