Mehso-so

I chose this as my first #AuldLangSpine because I DNF‘d it once before but really wanted to read it, having adored Night Circus. I finished 50% this time, which is farther than I made it last time. I love the idea of nested stories and symbols in a hidden, magical library, and wanted to love the characters and solve a great puzzle. But the tedium of pointless wandering became claustrophobic. Maybe 3rd time‘s the charm. @IndoorDame @monalyisha

monalyisha Oof. I also tried to pick this up because I loved The Night Circus and couldn‘t get into it, either. I couldn‘t tell if it was because I was in grad school at the time and couldn‘t focus, or if the fault was with the book. 🙈 You gave it a fair shot. Twice, even! 1y
IndoorDame @monalyisha @SueK such a popular reaction to this one! I was definitely in the minority in loving it as much as The Night Circus 😂 1y
SueK @monalyisha @IndoorDame I‘m kind of glad I‘m not alone. I‘ve seen lots of people say they love it! And I figured I would too, given how much I loved The Night Circus—and stories about stories!—but not this time, or not this story. Or maybe it‘s just me. Heh 1y

Larkken @IndoorDame count me in the minority too! Maybe it helped that I listened to it on audio first and the narration by Dominic Hoffman really pulled it into dreamy territory for me? 1y
IndoorDame @Larkken ooh, I can see how that would put you in the right headspace! I didn‘t know he did audio narration. I‘ll have to be on the lookout now 1y
SueK @Larkken @IndoorDame the audiobook voice acting and production is fantastic. Definitely worth checking out 1y

Pickpick

What a sweet way to end the year. I appreciate a contemporary romance that offers more than a myopic view of one couple getting together. This was more a coming of age novel featuring Beatles references, delicious foods, and heartfelt found family. One of my favorite reads of the year!

MaidaMalby Yes! One of my Top 22 of 2022. 1y
SueK @MaidaMalby So glad to hear it! Such a sweet note to end the year on. I really appreciated how we got to know and care about each of the Old Ducks 🦆 1y

@IndoorDame @monalyisha Thanks to you both for such a rich list! I will be reading from it all year. The top row are books that were on my tbr. Second row are books I didn‘t know about previously but now really want to read. I‘m a slow reader so the third row are some that I may not get to until February. #AuldLangSpine

rockpools What a fabulous list! Ain‘t Burned All the Bright is AMAAAAAZING! 1y
IndoorDame I‘m I looking forward to getting to know each other through our books this year! 1y
monalyisha I‘m happy you‘re interested in so many of them! My post was totally aspirational; there‘s no way I‘ll read as many as I featured in January (especially considering that I‘m in a couple of book clubs, as well). But it‘s fun to dream! And I‘ll keep reading from it as time goes on. 😉 Have fun! 1y

SueK @monalyisha glad to hear it‘s aspirational. That takes some of the pressure off 😅 It‘s always fun to get new recs for the tbr. I like the goal of reading them within 2023 as well, so I‘ll probably set that for myself. 1y
monalyisha @SueK Absolutely, yeah! The only commitment is to read at least one in January. If you/I get to more, great! If not, no worries. I‘m a mood reader so it‘s hard for me to give up agency in picking my own titles, no matter how appealing a list may be. I think I usually get to 3 or so in January. 😊 I try to find a pace where I can savor & enjoy. 1y
SueK @monalyisha I‘m also a mood reader. Thanks for the tip in balancing retaining your own agency while participating in book challenges and groups. I‘ve always struggled with that. 1y
