The writing in this book is captivating. The way he tells the stories of not only the family, but of supporting and minor characters really pulls the story together. Every backstory has purpose, and every character has their own story to tell. Such a good read.

Caroline2 I remember really enjoying this book too. 👍 3y

My first true crime book that I read. I was worried it was going to be boring, but it was the exact opposite. I couldn‘t believe the things the FBI let slide, and how easy it was for Bulger to manipulate and hurt people. A truly bizarre tale.

I was a little hesitant to finish this book. The layout is like a long essay, with run-on sentences, and had little breaks to show dialogue, and had footnotes (to me this was distracting and served no real purpose that added to the story).

In the end this book was complex, encompassed many themes, such as: success, betrayal, religion, and culture.

*Trigger Warning - this book does include scenes with sexual violence/assault.

So I got off on a rocky start with this one. The beginning started a bit slow before the story started really developing and conflict started happening. The ending tied everything together. It was a tear-jerker, so grab the 🧻

Playing a little bit of catch-up here:

This book had me hooked from the first chapter. The characters were people I rooted for. Seeing the difference between the driver and the passenger, the difference in classism, and what the “American Dream” means to the characters. The ending was something I didn‘t expect, but I still loved it.

I would‘ve liked to read an epilogue, but like I said the ending was a perfect conclusion.

Cathythoughts Great review! It hooked me from the start too. So good 4y

I needed something light hearted. Glad it was this. Made me laugh and re-watch 30 Rock all over again.

This book wasn‘t bad. An easy/fun read. It leans more on the romantic side, and those just don‘t appeal to me like they used to.
The main character was someone I found myself not rooting for. She wasn‘t someone I liked. She was selfish and immature. Sometimes she didn‘t even know why she did the things she did. However some situations she was in, I found super relatable as a woman.
Not a bad book, it just wasn‘t for me.

From the first page I was hooked. Incredible storytelling told from both views of the wife and husband.
More times than one, I wanted to reach in and just hug Yejide.
Moving, hopeful, and utterly heartbreaking.

This book fell a little flat for me.
It had no ending. However, the author wrote in such a way, I kept wondering where the book would lead. In the end it led to nowhere.

High Fidelity | Nick Hornby

“My desert-island, all-time, top five...”

Nick Hornby wrote the character Rob in such a way that it made me care what he was thinking and understood his actions (even though I didn‘t like Rob for most of the book). Then Hornby ties Rob up in the end as a truly relatable protagonist.

Leftcoastzen This is one time I love the book and movie equally.Even though they move the story from the U.K. to Chicago. (edited) 4y
SavannahtheSith @Leftcoastzen I‘d have to agree with you 100%! Can‘t wait for the Hulu series next month. 4y

The climax was a tad anti-climactic for me. But it was still a good read. Abra was my favorite character.

It was a little sad, but still a very good read. You still feel for both main characters, and understand where they come from and their way of thinking. Loved it.

Starting this book. A nice break from they mystery genre I've found myself favoring.
*Edit: I love his writing. But this book made me so frustrated. I loved the themes and questions it proposed, but the Virgin Suicides is still my favorite by him.

I loved this book. You fall in love with Mark Watney and you root for him from the very beginning. The movie doesn't do it justice.
