If You Sailed on the Mayflower in 1620 written by Ann McGovern is a great historical fiction book. Although the book is lengthy, it gives great description and goes into depth about the Mayflower ship itself and the story behind it. This book provides great description of the boat itself labeled and even touches on what a Pilgrim is at the beginning of the story! Very informative! http://www.annmcgovern.com #UCFLAE3414sp17

DrSpalding This is another valuable series to use while teaching social studies content. Good choice! 7y
KennadyM I've read other books in this series but not this one! They're great for teachers when getting into social studies and historical events 7y

The Very Hungry Caterpillar written by Eric Carle is a classic! This book has been around for 45 years so it is very successful! It describes the life of a caterpillar in a sense. It takes you through the stages of eating to prepare himself for being in a cocoon until he becomes a butterfly. This story would be a great way to introduce a lesson about a butterfly's life cycle! http://www.eric-carle.com/home.html #UCFLAE3414sp17

DrSpalding This is a good book to read along with a nonfiction book about butterflies and metamorphosis. 7y

Actual Size written by Steve Jenkins is a book that I loved doing my TeachLive on! This book describes specific animals in detail and the picture are all in ACTUAL SIZE! This is a great book for students to read if they are interested in animals and are curious about their size (height, length, weight)! Than at the end of the story there is a description of every animal spoke about in more depth! http://www.stevejenkinsbooks.com #UCFLAE3414sp17

DrSpalding Excellent idea to cite the author's web page. Books that can teach another content area like this are a valuable addition to your classroom library. 7y

It also teaches students what states are next to one another by the visuals that are shown throughout the story. We the Kids by David Catrow was a favorite book of mine that I picked up at Barnes and Noble. This book is about The Preamble to the Constitution of the United States. I found this book very interesting simply because it breaks it down in a way that younger children will be able to understand the specifics of what it all entails. It is written in a way that children would be interested and intrigued! http://www.catrow.com #UCFLAE3414sp17

DrSpalding Catrow's illustrations truly make the book for me. An excellent read aloud during a social studies unit. 7y

The Sneetches and Other Stories written by Dr. Seuss had a great storyline! There are Sneetches that have stars on their bellies and Sneetches that do not have stars on their bellies. One day they started giving and taking the stars away until everyone couldn't remember who started out with exactly what. It showed in the end that no one should be looked down upon no matter what your are like on the outside. http://m.seussville.com #UCFLAE3414sp17

DrSpalding An excellent message for children in this book! 7y
Slacorbiniere I love the message for children that this books gives. I think that this would be a good read aloud for the first day of class. 7y

Ellie written by Mike Wu had a really creative and cute cover so I had to read it! This book is about how a zoo keeper makes an announcement that it is about close down. All of the animals want to keep it open so they decided to "spruce" it up! As each zoo animal helps with their strength(gorilla) or height(giraffe) Ellie(an elephant) is trying to find her niche on how she can help keep the zoo open. http://www.theartofmikewu.com #UCFLAE3414sp17

DrSpalding This sounds like it might be a good storytelling! 7y
Slacorbiniere This sounds so interesting. Your description makes me want to read it right now! I want to know if the zoo stays open!! 7y
DanielleS The cover for this book is so attractive and makes me want to go and read it now! I'll have to check this one out! 7y
