Meet Biscuit! His owner tries to get him to fall asleep but he ends up wanting something else all the time. This is a precious book that I would recommend for k-2. Although there's not a lot of reading involved, I think it sends a good msg (caring for pets) & also help with independent reading for low levels. AF book! Here's a link to class activities! http://childrens-books.lovetoknow.com/Activities_for_Biscuit_Books #ucflae3414sp17

HeyMsBowen Biscuit! Wow, throwback. I miss the Biscuit books! ❤ He made me want a little dog so bad. 7y
DrSpalding The Biscuit books are classic reads for young children. You are correct in that it helps develop what are considered social studies skills in the caring for and responsibility of owning a pet. 7y

A Child's Anthology of Poetry | Elizabeth Hauge Sword

"I Shall Not Pass This Way Again.." This poetry book would be a great addition to a classroom library. It's filled w/ poems that'll connect w/ students' thoughts, feelings & experiences. It teaches children to be good to others in a poetic way *snaps fingers* #ucflae3414sp17 This link explains how to motivate reluctant readers with poetry http://teachersinstitute.yale.edu/curriculum/units/2011/3/11.03.01.x.html

Alisoncavicchi Poetry is one of the hardest genres to get children to self-select I feel. And your resource was great in addressing this reluctancy! I myself hadn't heard of this poetry book, and will definitely check it out 7y
HeyMsBowen I agree with Alison! Kids never want poetry, but having this resource available to them is awesome!! 7y
Mlegg I love that you found a good poetry book! Poetry is so much fun for students to read and such a great way to get them playing around with words. 7y
DrSpalding Wonderful comments and a wonderful anthology of poems. Poetry is usually short and appeals to reluctant readers for that reason. 7y

This HF book shows the relationship between a girl & her grandma during a visit. It's filled with pictures that'll captivate children. Sometimes children forget about how special their relationship with their grandparents are &this book will remind them. #ucflae3414sp17 http://www.randomhousekids.com/media/activities/.HowBabysitGrandma_Activities.pd... This link is of a fun activity that ties with the book & ends in a best grandma certificate!

Mlegg This seems like such a sweet story. So many children's book are about their relationships with their parents, I think it is great to share books about the sweetness of grandparents as well. 7y
DrSpalding Sweet story to read around Grandparents Day. Not HF but RF, correct? 7y
Slacorbiniere @DrSpalding oops! I meant RF 🙈 7y
DrSpalding No worries! You are learning! 7y

❤️❤️❤️This book teaches youngsters the importance of being kind and helpful. Clifford tries to help Tim and Emily but things just does not go as planned. Poor Clifford! He ends up finally doing a good deed (I won't tell u what) but he gets rewarded at the end of the story! #ucflae3414sp17 Here is a full lesson plan that ties in this awesome book! https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/cliffords-good...

Slacorbiniere I meant to mention in there that this is animal fiction. 🐶 7y
DrSpalding Animal fantasy is correct. Norman Bridwell has created a character that should be a part of every student's childhood. 7y
RanaH Love Clifford books!!! Loved watching the show. Good resource 7y

Is Stink shrinking? This is an adorable & humorous realistic fiction book that is part of the Moody collection. Judy Moody‘s little brother, gets his own series! This would be a great read aloud that will have students laughing at Stink's thinking. If the students love this book, they'll likely independently read the rest of the collection. Here's a link to a homemade trailer of the book https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfsV2RwjEEA. #ucflae3414sp17

DrSpalding Series are perfect for hooking readers into reading multiple books about the same character. Judy Moody's brother is easy to relate to as is most RF! 7y

Happy! | Pharrell Williams

I'm starting off with the link to the song "Happy" by Pharrell because this is why he made the book! (Also it's a great song). https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=y6Sxv-sUYtM This is a non fiction picture book. It is vibrant and I think that the photographer deserves a lot of credit. He captured many people of different cultures, sizes and ages. This would be a fun way to start the week with my students in a joyful way! #ucflae3414sp17

Alisoncavicchi I had no idea he published a book! I've seen teachers play this song for the class to "get their wiggles out" and putting this book on the projector or as an interactive read aloud would be a great addition to the wiggle time:) 7y
HeyMsBowen This book rocks!! I saw it at a workshop I went to! :) 7y
DrSpalding I own this one and agree with Sade that it is a great song. Playing the song as students entered the room would set the tone for an upbeat and positive day. I think this book could make an excellent storytelling with the instrumental music in the background. 7y

FUN BOOK ALERT! Larry does not want to share his book! This is a super interactive book that teaches the importance of sharing. The title itself is very inviting & once you open the book your students will not want to put it down. I would use this as part as fun Fridays while still teaching a life skill. Below is a link that explains the importance of sharing. http://www.petergmcdermott.com/2014/01/17/the-importance-of-sharing/ #ucflae3414sp17

HeyMsBowen I love this!! Fun book alert!! ❤ 7y
DrSpalding The title makes you want to pick it up and read it. 7y

This animal fantasy book is a wonderful choice to read to your students on the 1st day of school. It's a sweet & gentle story that includes beautiful illustrations. This book sends the message "you are loved" for every child and caters to children who are going through a difficult situation. Below is a link to a reading of this precious book. It's also useful for read aloud tips! http://www.storylineonline.net/kissing-hand/ #ucflae3414sp17

DrSpalding So glad you included Storyline Online. This site is produced by the Screen Actors Guild meaning that celebrities read aloud the stories. It is an excellent site to recommend to parents and one to use either with one to one devices or at a technology station in your classroom. 7y

This RF book is written about the author's own memories. It's about a boy named Tommy who anticipates the arrival of a baby sis. From the beginning to end, the story follows the boy's experience from the moment he found out his mom is pregnant. Check out this lesson plan! http://otooleschoollibraryportfolio.weebly.com/uploads/4/7/8/6/4786935/thematic_... #ucflae3414sp17

This is an adorable book! This pigeon really knows what he wants..at least he thinks he does! The pigeon throws a tantrum & tries to manipulate the reader's emotions. I would read this book to introduce the responsibility of having pets to my class & to teach the moral "be careful what you wish for". The link below shows a lesson plan that uses this book. https://tqpworkshop2012.wikispaces.com/file/view/Pigeon+wants+a+puppy.doc #ucflae3414sp17

Mlegg Love this and that it teaches children the responsibility of having a pet. I found the lesson plan you provided very useful and a good way to keep the students involved in the text. 7y
DrSpalding Excellent comment @Mlegg and Willem's books are enjoyed by the young and old alike! 7y

Once you open this book, you will not be able to put it down! It's won 4 medals including the newberry honor book and Scott o'dell award. It's a RF book about 3 girls who travel to Cali from NY in search of their mother who abandoned them. The mother is unapologetic and seemingly crazy! The story is set in 1968 and explores the girls' emotional journey. Below is a link about this book used for a read aloud. Http://thejoyofliteracy.blogspot

DrSpalding This used to be one of my LC choices. Multi-award winner and great example of HF! I couldn't get the link to work? 7y
Mariachen I would definitely be interested in reading this book! The story line sounds very interesting 7y

The Relatives Came | Cynthia Rylant

Pickpick

This fiction children's literature book is a sweet story about relatives coming to visit from Virginia. There's great detail on each page of the book. The illustrations are beautiful and would engage students as it engaged me! The illustrations added to the story and makes you feel warm from the love shown. Even though the house is small, the family has no issue with sleeping on the floors as long as they spend summer together. #UCFLAE3414sp17

DrSpalding What kind of fiction? 🙂 Be sure to add a hyperlinked resource! 📚 7y
Mariachen This seems like such a sweet story to read! Without reading it, I can already tell that there is a nice message that this book sends 🙂 7y
