A Time to Be Born | Dawn Powell
post image
Pickpick

I love Dawn Powell but every time I recommend her to someone they inevitably ask”Who?” making her the perfect choice for #underratedorlesserknownbook. In this book a NYC social climber tries to use the arrival of her old small town to her advantage. Sharp and funny this was the perfect book to complete #booked2021 with.

EvieBee I only know her because of Gilmore Girls. After that episode I bought her collection of work. Have yet to read! 2y
Jas16 @EvieBee Another reason to love Gilmore Girls! 2y
Suet624 Um... who? I've never heard of her. It's so hard to keep track of everyone!!! :) 2y
Jas16 @Suet624 it is impossible to keep track of everyone! But I will keep trying to get more people to read her. 2y

With alternating viewpoints, Scott delivers an emotional love story, with a lie that leads to tragic consequences. It‘s beautifully written - I found echoes of the style of one of my favorite books, Burial Rites by Hannah Kent. And, a great cultural lesson of Japan, both currently and nearly 20 years ago.

Very good read! I picked this for #Booked2021 #UnderRatedOrLesserKnownBook , as I found this title listed on a few lists that fit this prompt.

BarbaraTheBibliophage Oooh. This looks so good!!! 3y

Librarybelle @BarbaraTheBibliophage @BarbaraBB @Cinfhen It was very good! I‘ve already recommended to my staff member who hosts book discussions at the library to consider it for a future book discussion 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Librarybelle I put a hold on it at the library. Can‘t wait! 3y
BarbaraBB I now see I had it stacked already. Must definitely read it! 3y

Here‘s my #booked2021 second quarter wrap up. My favorite was The Lost City of Z. Hummingbird Salamander (my most anticipated) I sadly did not like at all. All the others I gave 3 and 3.5 stars.

#AuthorsFirstNameStartsWithABorC: Elantris
#MusicalInstrumentOnCover: Piranesi
#AntiracismBook: When They Call You a Terrorist
#ContainsPhotos: The Lost City of Z
#NewIn2021: Hummingbird Salamander
#UnderratedOrLesserKnownBook: Swimming in Darkness

Cinfhen Woohoo!!! Don‘t forget to fill out the form♥️You have until midnight, **July 3** to fill out the second quarter form? ?

Cinfhen I loved Lost City of Z too!!! It began my love affair with NF!!! Too bad the others were only meh 😕 3y
Zoes_Human I was disappointed with Hummingbird Salamander as well. Loved the idea but the execution fell short for me. 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Great job! I see your entry! 3y

That Reminds Me | Derek Owusu

Pickpick

I should have read this in print - not that the audio wasn‘t excellent, but it deserved my complete attention.

This is the story-in-poems of K, a black boy growing up in Britain, from foster care, through school and into adulthood, where a bipolar diagnosis and mental health issues become increasingly important. As a content warning, the ending resources list gives links to The Samaritans and Self Harm UK.

This is a powerful book - it‘s 👇🏻

rockpools beautifully observed and covers so much ground in one young man‘s life. The format makes it quite unique- to me it reads as individual poems, rather than a novel-in-verse, but they build to create such a strong picture of K‘s life. The author has described his story as 20% autobiographical, 80% fiction.

Thank you to #NetGalley and #MerkyBooks for an advance readers copy of this - I‘m glad to have read it, and will look out the print version.

TrishB Great review Rachel. This sounds fab ♥️ 3y

rockpools @TrishB I think you‘d like this one. I also think I‘m going to spend March reading books by/about delightfully care-free women! (Yeah, right!) 3y
TrishB It‘s payday tomorrow and I have a 650 tax rebate to spend! I may be buying some books and this has really caught my eye now! 3y
TrishB Good luck for March 😁 3y
squirrelbrain Great review - sounds like a wonderful book! 3y
rockpools @TrishB Well that sounds perfect! Also, is it payday tomorrow? I‘ve not got the hang of it yet - it‘s still a delightful surprise to find money lands in my account at the end of the month without me having to send out stroppy ‘Reminder‘ emails! 3y
rockpools @squirrelbrain Thanks Helen. I‘m going to give AHH another go now - still only half way through! 3y
TrishB It‘s definitely payday 😁😁 3y
Cinfhen Sounds great!!! But I‘m not a fan of this new blending of fact & fiction / it muddles things for me 3y
rockpools @Cinfhen I don‘t mind it too much - but I think I understand where you‘re coming from. If you can‘t separate the author from their character, I find it really hard to imagine them writing other books without that same character. And it makes books like Ocean Vuong‘s even more uncomfortable and disturbing. 3y
Cinfhen Yes, I‘m always curious what they will write next 3y

Three New Yorkers who need to face their futures and deal with their pasts if they are ever going to move forward with their lives and relationships. Are they able to forgive? Are the ready to be brave? Lots of moneyed white privilege but for me it never overshadowed the emotions of the characters. Absolutely made me want to roam around Manhattan again too. #booked2021 #authorsfirstnamestartswithaborc

JennyM I really liked this book and I think @emilyhaldi did too. I reckon it would also work for #UnderRatedOrLesserKnownBook. (edited) 3y
Jas16 @JennyM I think it would be a good choice for that prompt too. Wish I had thought of that because I still don‘t know what I will read for that one! 3y
JennyM @Jas16 me either! I‘m hoping for listy inspiration 😁 3y
