Five Go Off to Camp | Enid Blyton
post image
Mehso-so

#doublespin famous five is a perfect Boxing Day read but this one wasn‘t quite as good as the others. The boys were really mean to George (and Cecil, who didn‘t really seem to do anything wrong!), and a bit too much focus on Anne playing housewife.

Is it cheating if I read children‘s books in an attempt to salvage my reading goal for the year?

Thatbooknerd Absolutely not, it still counts! I always do this—besides, I love kid‘s books anyway. 4mo

Children plus dog explore the island in the cove where one of them lives and look for treasure.

Pure nostalgia with the book which is my earliest memory of owning a book. Read in memory of my uncle who gave it to me and who died last week.

Ruthiella Sorry to hear about your uncle. That is a lovely way to commemorate his memory. ❤️ 7mo

#doublespin done - another fun Famous Five book - so much food in this book 😆 also I know it‘s old but I found it hard to believe that anyone would let 4 children go off in a horse drawn caravan by themselves 🤯 Good fun - trying to teach Gary to #bemoretimmy

TheAromaofBooks I haven't read these, but I just finished rereading one of the Swallows & Amazons books (Coot Club) wherein two sets of parents let their children go off in a sailboat with a random stranger and the two children she had staying with her 😂 She had met the parents ONCE and they are just like “oh sure a multi-day sailing/camping adventure sounds like a great time for everyone“ soooo crazy to me! 7mo

A trip down memory lane for #doublespin enjoying my reread of my favourite series asked around 7-8. Love all the descriptions of the food they get to eat I remember being really jealous of all the weird picnics 🤣

Enjoyable when not feeling at my best!

I haven‘t read a Famous Five book in ages but this was honestly such a good time that - I‘m considering a full reread. The drama was amped up from the beginning, it‘s all more than a little ridiculous but it‘s set in a house with multiple secret passage ways… so what‘s not to enjoy?

He‘s literally been kidnapped, along with Sooty (who was just in the wrong place at the wrong time) and is being held underground in an old smugglers tunnel. Love the sentiment, Uncle Q but maybe play along??

This book is honestly so dramatic - I love it.

At this point, I‘m wondering if the stepfather loathing comes from personal experience…

Update : no personal experience of having a step parent but her beloved father did abandon the family, leaving her with a mother that she didn‘t particularly get along with. Wikipedia notes that she didn‘t attend either parents funeral.

“You don‘t have a stepmother and a stepfather!” said Sooty, scornfully. “You only have one or the other. My mother is my real mother, and she‘s Marybelle‘s mother too. But Marybelle and I are only half brother and sister because my stepfather is her real father.”

As someone with half siblings and an awful stepfather the SHADE in this book is hilarious! Everyone proceeds to feel extremely sorry for Marybelle having such an awful biological Dad.
