TricksyTails While in Haert, they discussed the importance of keeping names secret. I wondered why Kvothe would ever tell anyone his name then. Why not make up a name? But Elodin‘s comments to Kvothe when he mentioned Denna‘s constant name changing, made me wonder if there was some kind of detriment to changing your name. So curious! 6y

TricksyTails @MinDea Favorite parts were any part with Vashet. 😂 And Penthe. The way Elodin started really teaching Kvothe at the end. Bast at the end. Auri, of course. Bredon. When Kvothe knifes the century and calls down lightning. Fake Edema Ruh. Least favorite: Felurian, Meluan. 6y

MinDea So much still needs to happen. He needs to steal a princess, kill a king and be betrayed! So much needs to happen in the third book. Does anyone speculate who the princess he steals or the king he has to kill? I think Ambrose will be that king! Could Denna be that princess? Also who do you think the one of the Amyr is near the Maer that the Cthaeh mentioned? Could it be his manservant? 6y

MinDea @TricksyTails I feel like Meluan is someone in Kvothe's story. He recognized her. He has to know her somehow. But how? I feel like she will show up again 6y

MinDea @AmyG hahaha. I know right?!? Bast! I get why he did it, but WHYYYYYYY! I feel like since Kvothe got the 💩 kicked out of him it did the EXACT opposite thing he wanted to happen. So now what?!? Seems he could have gone about this a different way! Does anyone wonder WHY Bast is so adamant about Kvothe coming back to who he was? What is he hoping will happen or needs to happen?! 6y

TricksyTails @MinDea Definitely feel this is just the beginning with Meluan. So judge-y! Reminded me a bit of Catelyn Stark. Off with her head too! 😈🗡 6y

BarbaraJean @MinDea Favorite parts were Haert, and the crazy epic stabbing scene! I also really enjoyed the intrigue/plot surrounding the Maer, and that whole culture of giving rings, etc. The whole journey with the mercenaries kind of dragged on for me. I also still don‘t really like Denna—so much prefer Devi!! 6y

ScientistSam @MinDea @BarbaraJean @AmyG @Andrew65 @TricksyTails I feel like there is so much that is wrong in the "current" world when we're in the inn that the world needs a hero to fix it, and Bast is hoping that it's Kvothe's will that's broken but not his talent. I think he's trying so hard to force Kvothe to awaken, but the verdict is still out as to whether he will or whether he's just completely given up. I'm a little worried... 6y

And I feel like it‘s plausible—isn‘t he always boasting about being just a few steps away from the throne? And now Kvothe has all these connections in Vintas! Ambrose becoming the king of Vint and then being killed by Kvothe would be very fulfilling. In purely a narrative sense, of course. 😈 6y

MinDea @Andrew65 @ScientistSam @BarbaraJean @AmyG haha. Yes! I read the ending twice cause at first I was confused and then mad at Bast! I felt like it was a bit of a cliff hanger. Leaving us with a glimpse of Bast's evil side again but not explaining what his true intentions are. I worry they are more sinister or more selfish than wanting to help Kvothe become who he was. He has an agenda. Maybe you are right @ScientistSam They need a hero 6y

MinDea I remember now that he was a prince but never thought he would be the king that gives Kvothe the title of king killer. Ugh! That would be awful! But @TricksyTails you could be on to something. If Rothfuss is like Martin no one is safe! 6y

BookwormAHN Vashet is one of my favorites in this book and I still love Bast even after that 💩 he pulled. 6y

Andrew65 I have to say I was quite disappointed that there was so little Ambrose in this book. Who knew I‘d miss Ambrose. It would definitely be good if he was killed by Kvothe. 6y

Andrew65 In this book (for most of it) I missed Denna, Devi, Auri and the University. There were parts of the book that dragged a bit and not much seemed to happen. The whole Maer and Felurian section, and whilst I loved Vashet I even felt that section was a bit on the long side. Patrick certainly seems to like the slow and steady build up. I felt more events happened in the first book. (edited) 6y

BarbaraJean @Andrew65 Exactly! I want to know why she had such a strong reaction to Kvothe being Edema Ruh—there has to be something in her past that hasn‘t been revealed yet. There‘s a lot of prejudice toward the Ruh in general, but I feel like there was more going on with her. And the whole thing with the wooden box? I need to know more!! 6y

AmyG I agree....that Bast was trying to “jump start” Kvothe. But I still feel something‘s not right there. 6y

BarbaraJean @MinDea I love the idea that the Maer‘s manservant might be one of the Amyr. I had forgotten that the Cthaeh said there was an Amyr near the Maer. It would make sense for it to be Stapes... thinking back, I feel like there is more to Stapes than we‘ve been told. And more to the Maer as well!! 6y

BarbaraJean @ScientistSam That‘s such an interesting connection—I didn‘t think about the truck and the box being similar, but they really are! I don‘t think they are the same, because the box was much smaller, wasn‘t it? But maybe the trunk is a similar type of artifact? 6y

tonyahoswalt I'm late again! I was trying to finish up. I still have around 60 pages to go, and though it's a reread, I'm not sure I remember what happens in those pages. // I am not too fond of Alveron, or the way he treats Kvothe, takes such convincing to believe him, etc. // I love Bast so much. I know he does something at the end, based off your comments, but I don't remember what. I'm off to finish! 6y

CareBear I just love Rothfuss‘ writing so of course I enjoyed this one, but not quite as much as the first. Parts of it dragged for me in ways I didn‘t feel during the first one. But it‘s the second in the trilogy ... so it‘s the middle. And that‘s usually the weakest, in my opinion. 6y

laundry_piles @MinDea I did! I finished it a few weeks ago. Love some of the points people being up here, very interesting. I thought it was ok. It dragged WAAAAYYY to long for me and was miffed what it took 92 chapters to get interesting. The ending was a good twist though, I'll give him that 6y

tonyahoswalt The only part of the book I didn't love was Felurian. Other than that, it didn't drag for me. I so enjoy his writing. I can't wait for book 3! 6y

MinDea @tonyahoswalt I felt like all the sections just went a tad too long and it all just added up and felt a bit long winded. I enjoyed the book and I think my so-so review was a tad harsh. Cause the more I think about it the more I feel like a lot did happen in this book. it was all in the details. It wasn't necessarily big huge action packed things but small significant things did happen. I love this story! @ 6y

ScientistSam @Andrew65 it's good to have such a villanous villain, and the confeontations showcase Kvothe's cleverness (and youth). And Ambrose is a somewhat less epic and less creepy villain than the Chandrian 6y

MinDea Yes! @Andrew65 I might have the unpopular opinion here but I have been a tad bored these last few weeks with Kvothe's story. I hope it is all leading somewhere, that his time in Haert will make sense at the end of this book. Right now I am not sure where this is all going. But it has to be for a reason, right?! 6y

Andrew65 @MinDea I would have to agree with you until we hit those chapters in the 90s it was dragging a bit. Shock! Horror! I too wonder where this is all going. At the moment we just seem to be getting Information in the main. Obviously heading towards something in the third book because not a lot of this book left. (edited) 6y

CareBear @MinDea I agree being a tad bit bored with this section. Of course I love the story but I felt like the parts with Felurian dragged on. But the part with the cteuha 😮 (I know I probably misspelled that but I don‘t have the book with me to look it up!) 6y

TricksyTails @CareBear She‘s a great character too! I loved how she played in the dancing leaves. I love most of the Adem characters. Tempi, Vashet, and Shehyn too! Fascinated with the culture. 6y

Andrew65 @TricksyTails I agree it is a fascinating section with some great Adem characters, but do feel the book has got itself trapped in another big loop, just like the Felurian section. I wonder how this will be brought to an end and the story moved forward again. (edited) 6y

MinDea I hope all of this makes sense. Felurian, Adem, Ambrose, Chandrian, Denna, just everything. Just hope it all comes together. 6y

MinDea @BookwormAHN yes I was wondering that. Like how old is Kote? Not thaaaaat old. So when does he start to hide out? I mean, does he ever go back to Felurian? Will he go back at the end of his story because he knows he won't be able to leave? 6y

BookwormAHN @MinDea I wonder if that will be like the epilogue. Kote tells his tale and when it's finished he journeys back to Felurian. 6y

MinDea It might be! But that won't be at the end of the next book since Rothfuss plans to extend Kvothe's story after The Chronicler. I just feel like the Chandrian won't be figured out next book! 6y

Andrew65 I think he will make it back to the Maer in this book, but not sure we will make it back to the University, I think that will form the third book (come on Patrick, we need you!!!). Andrew65 It was quite an explosive scene with Bast in the last interlude (think it was the last one), I am still trying to get my head round that one, the what and the why of it, and want to read that again before moving on with the story. Then more books will come out that will take place post life story telling to the Chronicler! AmyG Sorry I‘m late to the party...Passover. A little slow for me until Ch. 91. I agree that fear puts Kvothe‘s mind in a state where he is able to do incredible things. Perhaps he just reacts as opposed to thinks. I kept wondering if Bast is his child with Felurian. That part was a bit brutal for me....slow. The Oracle tree was fascinating. I had read the first one before the group read and felt the same way about it then too. It's hard to explain. I like it but hate how the story doesn't really pick up until almost the end and then at that point I just want to be finished with it. 6y
