Kunoichi Bunny | Sara Cassidy

Pickpick

Saya and her bunny are a superhero team, saving animals and people as they go about their day, which consists of a trip to the park. Saya‘s dad remains totally oblivious of the heroics, only puzzled about why Kunoichi bunny keeps ending up far from Saya‘s stroller. Sweet, mostly wordless, with lovely illustrations by Brayden Sato. #Canadian #kidlit

A toy and some animals have adventures in search of “the biggest cookie ever” after a human child falls asleep. There‘s gentle suspense & a quiet feeling of wonder in this easy-but-not-simplistic #graphicnovel for emerging readers. Liniers‘ ink & watercolour artwork is lovely, especially his rendering of the Vermont setting. The book caught my attention by being nominated for an Eisner; each time I read it, my appreciation deepens. #kidlit

There‘s a lovely combo of fantasy and reality in this book, as shown here: the believable action of the family dog playing with a floppy toy; the pleased (and dizzy) participation of the toy.

“Please don‘t scare me… I faint easily.”

I‘m not actually sure if this toy is a fawn or a goat. I had heard about fainting goats, but it turns out that there are fainting fawns also. (I had to google that. Sometimes books take me down surprising Internet rabbit holes.)

saresmoore Fainting fawns! Too funny! 6y

I had expected a parody of Goodnight Moon, but this sweet #graphicnovel for emerging readers only makes a literary allusion to it, one that children will recognize, and in doing so, introduces young readers to that particular pleasure that comes from reading widely. The author based the story on his child Emma‘s real-life toy, which she named Planet.

The child in this graphic novel for emerging readers doesn‘t slow down often but here she‘s absorbed in a book titled Hat. Anyone recognize this book (or art reference, if it‘s not a book)? It looks familiar but I haven‘t had any success searching online, since the title is so generic.

night_shift It does seem familiar. Any mention in a 'thank you' section or the copyright page? If no one has an answers for you, you could just ask him. The writer is active on Twitter. @porliniers 6y
Lindy @UnidragonFrag Thanks for the suggestion. I‘m shy about contacting the creator, but I will if I don‘t find out through other methods. 6y
xicanti It reminds me of a Sesame Street character--Bert, I think? 6y

Lindy @xicanti I see the resemblance, and Bert and Ernie both wear interesting hats at times. 6y
LibrarianRyan I agree with the Bert and Ernie thing. 6y
GrilledCheeseSamurai Yeah...it doesn't strike me as something I immediately recognize... 🤔 6y
alanacristin I don't know it as a specific book, though i agree it looks like Bert. We just read one with Bert and Ernie on the cover and Bert is wearing a pot as a hat... 6y
Lindy @xicanti @LibrarianRyan @GrilledCheeseSamurai @alanacristin Well, I followed @UnidragonFrag‘s suggestion and tweeted my question to Liniers. His response: “I made it up... would be a cool read though...” 😁 6y
night_shift Haha.. cool! Maybe he'll write it now 😃 6y
