Pickpick

What a lovely story. And very unique, despite its homage to The Secret Garden, and not just in place and character. Positioned with teens rather than children opens the door for romance, and Mary and Sophie are so sweet as they discover first love. Despite the horror and pain of the Craven storyline (no spoilers!) this book is largely a pretty picture of Ontario‘s North, with beautiful gardens, of course. I liked it quite a bit more than expected!

“Mary Craven didn‘t think about death until the day it knocked politely on her bedroom door and invited itself in.”

Next up! This all-female retelling of The Secret Garden with and Indigenous perspective has been on my TBR for too long. There‘s a queer element too, making it the perfect June read.

I finished my awesome puzzle yesterday afternoon, and Cherie Dimaline and I are back on track with her Secret Garden remix! The original is one of those books Tiny Me drifted away from so I can‘t claim to know the source material well, but from a pure storytelling perspective I love everything Dimaline‘s doing here. #audiopuzzling

Andrew65 A great book! 7y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I haven't read this since I was a young child. It might be time for a reread. 7y

This is a much nicer picture than this book deserves. I really should have shown it with flames instead of flowers, because it deserves death by fire for ruining a childhood favorite. It may be the only book I‘ve actually thrown in the trash. 😡 #crimesagainstcovers

LeahBergen Eee! Thanks for warning me (I won‘t be tempted if I come across it now).😂 7y
readordierachel Noted 😆 7y
rubyslippersreads @LeahBergen @ReadOrDieRachel There is a children‘s book with the same title which I haven‘t read, which might be okay, but the tagged book would scar any child who read it! 7y

LibrarianRyan By chance is this the one where animal boy dies in the war and the girl ends up married to her Cousion? 7y
BookwormM Oh dear that is not good 7y
rubyslippersreads @LibrarianRyan This is the one where the three main characters either sleep with each other or want to. 😳 7y
LibrarianRyan @rubyslippersreads lovely. One of the sequels was incorporated into one of the movie versions. colon and ----- marked and Dickon died in the war. OMG. I was sooo mad. 7y
Sarah83 Not good? 7y
RealBooks4ever Oh dear!...😮 7y
Kimberlone I think I remember watching the movie version of this...didn‘t realize it was adapted from a book sequel. The original book is SO good and ends on such a perfect note. (edited) 7y

I'm reading the secret garden at the moment, and I really wish to have my own secret garden. I wish to runaway and be alone with my books and imagination ...
