A YA novel in verse about the Zoot Suit Riots or as the author pointed out, the Sailor Riots in 1940‘s Los Angeles. I wasn‘t born yet but being Mexican and living in the suburbs of LA I‘ve always been aware of the riots and the Sleepy Lagoon murder. Was a nice change of pace to read something about this event from different perspectives.

One night the drunk & violent sailors brutalized the young men mercilessly. Of course the military denied reality, blaming the young dancers for starting it…
pickThis book won the Kate Greenaway Medal. This book is about a man who comes home from a long trip to find out his parents have vanished. He is DETERMINED to search everywhere for them.

My #bookspin & #doublespin for April. Another chunkster for my #bookspin. I‘ve heard this one is good, so hopefully it doesn‘t take me all month.
I have bookmail! Isn‘t it pretty? It‘s also 6pm on Friday, and I‘ve just turned of the work phone. Plus, the gas engineer came at 5pm yesterday, so we‘ve had a full 24 hours of heating & hot water & only wearing 1 jumper at a time 🎉🎉🎉

pickThis is the third novel I‘ve read of Favel Parrett‘s. It is the second of her three books and she has become a #mustreadauthor for me. My favourite is still her first novel, Past The Shallows.
In this book her stunning yet sparse prose illuminates Tasmania and Antarctica, and I loved her beautifully drawn characters.
I‘m ready and waiting for her next offering 🤗🤞😍.

I don‘t really think this book gets the idea of Mody Dick across. I realize it‘s turning hundreds of pages into 30 words or less, but it doesn‘t work. It makes Moby Dick seem like a happy go lucky story. So it doesn‘t work for me.

bailedThe cover sure is pretty, but after 75 pages of war and violence and meditations on manhood, I think I'm done. Just not my cup of tea. Also, the language feels a bit stilted, and I'm wondering if that's just me or is an effect of the translation. Spoiler tag in the comments for what finally tipped me over the edge.
