This one was a slow start for me because I don't have children. Or want them. But it's really well written even if I struggled to relate at the beginning.

Not that it will happen, but every soon-to-be father should be required to read sections of this book. A woman explains what her life has become once she has become a mother. Her husband is busy at work and he abdicates all responsibility for the child. The exhaustion, anger, disappointment, loneliness, desperate love and raging anger toward a young child, all of it was perfectly described.

Tamra I was lucky, my husband was really great co-parenting both of our children as infants & tots. (Not that he isn‘t now, but that‘s the focus of the novel.) I have serious admiration and at times sympathy for single parents & guardians without a source of support. 9mo
Suet624 @Tamra my situation is so varied. Three marriages, children every 7 years with the last two being twins. I was a single mom occasionally. My last husband was very helpful. The others, not so much. Living in a commune with my first child was VERY helpful. 9mo
TheBookHippie I agree. A must read. 9mo

Tamra @Suet624 I can see any arrangement with multiple responsible adults in a household with small children would be a great fortune! 9mo
Suet624 @Tamra it really was the best. 9mo
BarbaraBB I loved this book too. That husband though. I can‘t imagine living with and tolerate such a man 9mo
Anna40 I think most men, even if they read it, would still not understand. But great review! 9mo
Suet624 @Tamra I was thinking about your comment again and it made me wonder why some men are great at understanding the needs of a new mother and others aren‘t. Probably a million reasons but I‘m glad yours was on top of things. 😊 9mo
Suet624 @BarbaraBB I know! And I fear it or some variation of it happens more than we like to think. 9mo
Suet624 @Anna40 oh my. You might be right. 9mo
Tamra @Suet624 we were way older than average and ready so that was part of it and my husband isn‘t thoughtless. 😂 9mo
Suet624 @Tamra that‘s a great point about age. That‘s definitely a huge factor. (edited) 9mo

5/5 🌟

Beautiful. Funny. Raw. Honest. Primal. Angry. Moving. This book evoked a whirlwind of emotions. It's a powerful and candid account of a first-time mum's journey, exploring her immense love for her child alongside the struggles of motherhood and the loss of self that often accompanies it.

It doesn't sugarcoat the realities of being a parent, and for that, it feels deeply relatable. An amazing book!

A great reading month, but Claire Kilroy's Soldier Sailor (with a fantastic audio narration by Simone Collins) wins out.

"You thought wolves were extinct in this land? I thought so, too. The sea is not glittering, and the mothers are not serene, and the wolves were never more alive than they are tonight. They are volatile, they are vengeful, and you have summoned them to your door."

@Andrew65

Andrew65 Will have to check this audiobook out. (edited) 10mo
TheKidUpstairs @Andrew65 I tried reading this one in both digital and physical formats and couldn't get into it, but was absolutely enraptured by the audio! 10mo
Andrew65 @TheKidUpstairs Good to know, thanks 😊 10mo

I can see the value in this book, but at 25% I was still not connecting and decided to give up.
