Coral Glynn: A Novel | Peter Cameron

Pickpick

So the story was lacking, but I was so engaged with the main character, Coral. She gave me that gothic, ethereal feel that I get when reading Jane Eyre and Rebecca. So 2/5💍s for the story, 4/5💍s for the character.

I‘m on track with my alphabet challenge using books from my shelf. This one has languished for years.

spam of catch up posts Book 2 Chapter 12: Passivity: Harry and Ron must remain passive while acting as Crabbe and Goyle so they don't alert Malfoy to their scheme. Ron finds it hard not to react hearing the things that Malfoy says about his family. Both, Harry and Ron, must keep from reacting to his comments about mudbloods and Hermione. They persevere through it and keep to their plan.

#HPChapteraDay Day 29: #Passivity

Dumbledore has the wisdom to know the rare circumstances when it's for the best to be passive (e.g. when Fawkes is being reborn). But this is a rare instance. Harry unwisely chooses to stay silent when he can tell Dumbledore his concerns. And Draco is passive with respect to the heir only to keep his nose clean (making a decent choice for impure reasons).

Taking good action is almost always the better choice.

Ch. 12 The Polyjuice Potion #passivity
Hermione's transformation potion is a success! The only problem is that she has unknowingly used the hair of a cat instead of Slytherin, Millicent Bullstrode. Although totally out of character, Hermione, now that she is a large cat, decides to hide and passively wait it out. When Harry and Ron see what has happened, they take her to the hospital wing and Madame Pomfrey. #hpchapteraday

8little_paws I love cats but this picture is horrifying 7y
KellyK @8little_paws I totally agree! Glad I saw the pic this morning and NOT right before bed! 😳 (edited) 7y
DivineDiana @8little_paws @KellyK Poor Hermione! I can only imagine her fright! 😿 7y

Christy2318 I didn't understand why Harry & Ron changed back in a hour but it took months for Hermione to change. 7y
mom2bugnbee @Christy2318 I always assumed that it was because it was an animal hair rather than a human hair & therefore had different effects. I can't remember if I heard that from a legitimate source, or if I just made that up myself. ☺ 7y
mllemay @Christy2318 I think it's because the potion is only meant to change from human to human, and not human to animal. I'm pretty sure she mentions it herself before going to Madam Pomfrey. (edited) 7y
Christy2318 @mom2bugnbee @mllemay Thanks! I'll have to reread that part before I start today's chapter. 7y

What struck me in this chapter was Dumbledore's #passivity with Harry. Dumbledore doesn't think Harry's to blame, but he knows something is up & that Harry's withholding something. Instead of drawing Harry out, he just lets it go. It's frustrating how passive the teachers are in this book, especially when there's something roaming the castle trying to kill students! (As well as an incompetent Defense against the Dark Arts teacher!) #hpchapteraday

Amandajoy I thought at the end of the chapter, Madame Pomfrey was the ultimate passive teacher. She asks no questions about Hermione because she doesn't want to know what mischief they've gotten into. 7y
BarbaraJean @Amandajoy I know--and there's a pattern there, since Ron basically says Madam Pomfrey won't ask them any questions! Maybe there's a magical version of HIPAA law that she's complying with? 😏 7y
MyNamesParadise Whoa great observation about Dumbledore's passivity towards Harry! For some reason that didn't register with me. 7y

#hpchapteraday #passivity In this chapter, we can contrast the passivity of Crabbe & Goyle with the activity of the trio. Ultimately this theme in this chapter underlines the need for all of us to be active. We have to choose to be the person we want to be rather than passively falling into expectations, & do the actions we know are right in order to effect the change we want to see in the world.

Chapter 12: On Christmas, Harry gets lots of presents, but we never hear about what he gives his friends. Doesn't he give them anything? #passivity #hpchapteraday

#passivity Ron & Harry need to remain passive to pull off being Crabbe and Goyle. Malfoy is being passive in his lack of action. He's full of talk, but I don't think he would actually do anything even if he knew who the heir of Slytherin was.
#hpchapteraday @hpchapteraday

mllemay I was also sad that Harry remained passive and silent when given an opportunity to vent his frustrations by Dumbledore. Things might have been easier if he had opened up instead of keeping quiet. 7y
Lmstraubie @mllemay I agree. It seems that both he & Dumbledore keep things from each other that would actually be beneficial. 7y

So..

Dumbledore is very passive in his approach to get information out of Harry- in fact almost to much so his silence is unsettling.
Obviously the boys struggling with there reactions when they transform- so as not to raise suspicion from Draco and the other Slytherins.

Passivity. Readers do not like inactive heroes. They want action, proactive, choices. A book where they dither is a slow read. The polyjuice potion seemed to take sooo long to prepare... And don't even start me on Dumbledore's inexplicable silence. Yes yes, the books would be way shorter if he solved all Harry's problems. But still...
