What an absolute triumph of a book. #wpnf25

In the summer of 2017, 9 year old Keira was killed in a tragic car accident. Her family's decision to donate her organs led to her heart being transplanted into Max, also 9. Dr Clarke writes the story of Keira and Max, their families, and all the incredible people who contributed to this heart's journey with such compassion and humanity.

Cont'd in comments.

TheKidUpstairs At each stage of the journey she offers fascinating historical context to the achievement: the doctor who developed a standardized trauma response for medical professionals, the doctor who first used manual ventilators to save Polio patients, the first to successfully operate on a heart. It is a book that speaks to the heart and mind in equal measure. Highly recommend 9mo

jenniferw88 I'm a bit wary of this one, as I've had a heart transplant myself. 9mo
Chelsea.Poole Love your review “speaks to the heart and mind”. Very well put! I‘m planning to pass on this one. I have a 9 year old, plus I don‘t enjoy medical-focused books. Those two factors together… I‘d be traumatized! V glad the book exists though. 9mo
TheKidUpstairs @Chelsea.Poole I totally get that. My middle guy is 9, I cried so much reading this one. She handles it really beautifully, but it's rough! 9mo
TheKidUpstairs @jenniferw88 I can see how it would hit a bit close to home. 9mo
Hooked_on_books Well done review of a beautifully crafted book. I found this one hard to put down. 9mo
jenniferw88 @TheKidUpstairs I'll read it if it makes the shortlist. If not, I'm probably going to leave it. 9mo
youneverarrived Having young kids I don‘t feel like I could read this. It sounds amazing though. Great review. 9mo

Having spent 20 years in medicine, this isn‘t something I would usually read, but it‘s beautifully done. It‘s the story of 2 kids, one in desperate need of a heart transplant to survive and the other in a horrible car wreck. It‘s handled with gentleness, care, and grace, showing every step of the transplant process through their stories and enriched by some historical narrative. Superb. #WPNF25

Leniverse I'm a bit scared to read this one, I have to say. 9mo

squirrelbrain I‘ve read extracts of this when it was serialised in a UK newspaper and it seems SO good. 9mo

It was ok but the twist just feels weird to me. Not really so predictable but just wasn‘t a huge fan to be honest.

Starting this. Also shiny cover. Also trying to take a pic that doesn‘t have my overhead light shining on it and creating a glare lol

AutumnRLS I always have the glare issue. The struggle is real! 6y
tpixie Fun cover!! Yes glares and shadows, our enemies!! 😜 6y

I loved this nonfiction book about organ transplant! It was a great mix of history and Mezrich‘s personal experience as a surgeon. I especially loved the donor and recipient stories. #booksleeve #nonfiction #science #organtransplant
