This is a book I thought about for a while before reading. My main thing with this sort of book is the question is this a character study or does the author hold these opinions? I can do horrible and unlikeable but not if I feel that the author is secretly trying to get you on side.
There are some stories that have had a huge affect on our culture but often when we go back to the source we find it distorted, I really feel I need to see firsthand

Weaponxgirl This is also the sort of book that is hard to read through a modern lens, I work with children. My safeguarding training is high on this one. I'm also reading it through a feminist perspective and just bloody angry 6y
Weaponxgirl But a part of me can't help but admire someone putting a book out like this to show the darkness for the time period. Sure we as a society have said for a long time that this sort of behaviour is wrong but the truth is that for years if it happened in the home it was largely ignored along with domestic violence. I know people who suffered abuse in the 70s and it was not investigated because family secrets. As a society we still aren't perfect 6y
Sophoclessweetheart Great thoughts. I‘ve read a lot of essays by Nabokov and these ARE NOT HIS VIEWS. I can‘t stress that enough, he is very clear that these are not his views. But, this book is still really really hard to read if you‘re a mother, or working closely with children like you do. My perspectives have changed 1000% since becoming a mother. 6y

Weaponxgirl @Sorceryandswords yes! This was the first thing I had to find out before I could read this book! One reason I wanted to do this as a read a long was because I knew I'd have lots of thoughts on this and would NEED to talk about it. 6y
Weaponxgirl @Sorceryandswords I also don't think this book could/should be written today. We have come too far but as I said above I sometimes think art should challenge us by looking at the darkness in society of the time. I imagine it's even harder to read as a parent 6y
Sophoclessweetheart It‘s so so difficult. Especially as I have a daughter. I‘m finding it very hard to keep going. But I do agree that we should be challenged now and again with the darkness of society and made aware and cautious. I also agree that there is NO WAY that this could be written today. 6y
Weaponxgirl @Sorceryandswords I read the chapter last night about his first wife and it bought up so many alarm bells and memories for me. I've always looked young for my age and when I was in my early 20s some of the men that would hit on me used to make me feel sick even at the time as they were quite a lot older and obviously thought I was younger. But this shows how well written this is that I can still find it relevant today 6y
Sophoclessweetheart Definitely!! That part has always alarmed me too. It‘s terrible and it brings up thoughts about people you know who‘ve been that girl and makes you wonder! 6y
Insightsintobooks This book was based upon a true story of a girl that was kidnapped, if I remember correctly. It is not the author's view. 6y
Weaponxgirl @Sorceryandswords but the writing of the character is superb. We are more aware of signs of domestic violence now than when this was written and humbert talking about wanting to hurt the wife not because he cares she's leaving but because it's not "her" choice was absolutely chilling. Humbert sees nothing wrong with this and I was red flagging so hard. How he never saw her as a person lets us know what sort of person we are hearing. 6y
Weaponxgirl @Insightsintobooks I've seen a book that's about the case but it's not out yet and I really want to read that soon too. 6y
Sophoclessweetheart I know what you mean. It‘s terrifying. HH seems to have a god complex and as you‘ll see, it‘s that that contributes to his inevitable downfall x 6y

I‘m really enjoying my reread. I‘m hoping to read a good chunk today and over the weekend! I‘m not well with Lolita for #lolitalightofmyreadalong though... I‘m 60-65 pages in and I‘m hating it more and more as I go. Mum brain has definitely conquered this one and stripped it of favourite book status to book I can‘t abide. I‘m trying to stick with it but I may end up shelving it before page 100. 👎 #bibliophile #bookaddict #booklover #bookworm

Caroline2 I couldn‘t get thro Lolita either!!! 😟 6y
Sophoclessweetheart @Caroline2 This is my seventh reread and it‘s always been a favourite of mine, but it‘s my first reread since having my daughter and it‘s completely changed my views. 6y
Caroline2 Yeah, I‘ve only ever read it as a mum and your perspectives and tolerance levels are completely different aren‘t they!! I couldn‘t finish it! I loved the tagged book tho!! 👍🏻 😆 6y

Sophoclessweetheart @Caroline2 Definitely!! I am noticing this so much! I can‘t read thrillers anymore now I‘m a mum either because SO MANY of them have something bad happening to a child and I just can‘t deal with it. It‘s quite fascinating really how much my tastes have changed due to it x 6y
FerFer “Lolita” was a tough one to get through. Reading about a child being sexualized, fantasized over and horrifically abused was disgusting. 6y
Sophoclessweetheart @FerFer I completely agree. I‘ve given up on it entirely. DNFed at 70 pages. 6y

Quick post this morning because my stress levels are Feeling the rage of a thousand suns... 🔥
My current reads are going well and I‘m finding I can still pick out what made me love Lolita whilst still feeling like I need to stop reading it. I‘m hoping that‘s a good sign and that if I push on it‘s positives will overshine mum-brain 🧠 How are all the other #lolitalightofmyreadalong honeys doing? Let‘s discuss! #booklover #bookblog #bookaddict

Weaponxgirl I'm doing my two chapters a day and finding it quite enough as humbert is vile. But the writing is good and obviously a stylistic choice so far. The narrator obviously thinks he's special and using such beautiful language is him trying to make himself out to be refined and high minded. He's term of nymphet made me rage I have to say. I already have a lot of thoughts on this book. 6y
Sophoclessweetheart @Weaponxgirl yes, I completely agree. My mum brain has reduced me to reading 1-2 chapters a day too. The writing is used so genuinely cleverly, but it doesn‘t hide the monster that HH is. I can‘t wait to hear all your thoughts! 6y

Ah! Finally! I can post photos again, after three days of not being able to! I presume no one else had this issue ?? 🤷🏼‍♀️

This is my “hopefully” TBR stack for July. I absolutely suck at monthly stacks and usually don‘t bother because I‘m such a mood reader but I have so many books I need to tackle so I‘m going to try and stick to it! I‘m rereading Lolita and Fingersmith now. #monthlytbr #bookstack #bibliophile #lolitalightofmyreadalong

Weaponxgirl I really enjoyed fingersmith when I read it 😀 6y
Sophoclessweetheart @Weaponxgirl It‘s a great book! I love Sarah Waters 🖤 6y
DivineDiana It‘s so frustrating when tech isn‘t working! ☹️ I haven‘t had that problem for quite some time. 🤞🏻 6y

#lolitalightofmyreadalong Day one! I‘ve just started my reread for @romireads readalong and this will be my seventh reread of this book. It‘s one of my ultimate favourite books and I am an avid Nabokov fan. Who else is taking part in the readalong? Have you read Lolita before? #bookish #bibliophile #bookaddict #bookblog #bookworm #booklover #modernclassic #vladimirnabokov

Weaponxgirl So I'm hoping to take part and I've never read this before. 6y
Sophoclessweetheart @Weaponxgirl Oh! I hope that you‘ll enjoy it. 👏 6y
youneverarrived I read it when I was about 18 so be interesting to see if my views change on it now I‘m older x 6y
