John Lennon: The Life | Philip Norman
post image
Mehso-so

Is the goal of a good biography to be objective? Is that even possible? Of course Norman wrote this after John‘s death, so he was dependent on interviews with people who knew him and his journals. Yoko refused to endorse this book because she said the author was “too mean” to John. Maybe that‘s true and he chose to slant it that way, or maybe based on some of John‘s actions, especially towards women, he was just trying to tell the truth. 🎶/5

TrishB It‘s sometimes hard for anyone to see past the cult of John. Hence the being mean. He did not treat women well (or his son!) - he was human. 3w

Sick again (or still?) so taking a slow day today. Been listening to Paul McCartney‘s underrated 2005 solo album, Chaos and Creation in the Backyard. Highlights for me are Friends to Go, Promise to You Girl, and the haunting Riding to Vanity Fair:

TieDyeDude Thanks for the recommendation! 1mo
TieDyeDude Our local independent radio station is big on the Beatles and played “Fine Line“ a lot when it was released. I hadn't listened to the rest before. I like “Too Much Rain“ and “Riding to Vanity Fair“. 1mo
CSeydel @TieDyeDude Oh, nice! I do like Fine Line as the album opener, but yeah Riding to Vanity Fair is probably my favorite. Too Much Rain is beautiful also. 1mo

This was a good read, set in a Liverpool, England.

First book in the DS Nathan Cody Series, where he is investigating the murders of fellow police officers. Nathan himself is struggling to cope with events from a previous case. I look forward to continuing this series.

Oh, how frustrating were those parents, especially Helen‘s mother! How irresponsible of them! This included a 2nd part to the memoir called “Liverpool Miss”. It did end a bit abruptly, though with an epilogue by Helen‘s son to explain where Helen eventually ended up and how she got there. But with regard to the abrupt ending to Helen‘s part of the story, it does seem there is a continuation. I will be putting it on my tbr.

Sing is Story of the Blues by The Mighty Wah- a Liverpool band (not sure how big the song was outside the U.K.).
Book is a new one I found which I now need to buy for hubby and read myself! It‘s about a club called Eric‘s in Liverpool which was to the 70s what The Cavern was to the 60s. Hubby saw his first matinee gig there of T-Rex supported by The Damned.

rockpools 👂🐛 ! 🎶First… they take your pride🎶 That‘s me for the day then. Cheers. 7mo
TrishB @rockpools welcome 😁♥️ 7mo
JillR My only “claim to fame” is that my mum‘s cousin was in T-Rex! 7mo

BarbaraBB The book seems great. I never heard of the band. Looking forward to find out! 7mo
Suet624 So many memories of T-Rex on repeat. 7mo
TrishB @JillR that‘s very cool 👍🏻 although I‘m guessing it‘s not Marc! 7mo
TrishB @BarbaraBB a new one for you then 👍🏻 7mo
TrishB @Suet624 they never grow old. 7mo
Cinfhen Not familiar with the band either @BarbaraBB and both books sound great 😊 7mo
Bookwomble @JillR 😲🤯 OMG! T.Rex is one of my favourite bands, and Marc an absolute icon 🤩 Do you mind me asking the name of your mum's cousin? 7mo
Bookwomble @TrishB ? It's sinful ? It's tragic ? Love a bit of Pete Wylie. Him, Ian McCullough and Julian Cope were right "gobs on legs" back in the day, weren't they ? 7mo
Vansa @JillR oh wow I LOVE Ride a white swan!! And Get it on, of course, that's so cool! 7mo
Vansa I love this song! I don't know any other songs by The Mighty Wah though 7mo
Deblovestoread Love being introduced to new to me music. 😊 7mo
TrishB @Bookwomble they definitely were! Lovingly calling themselves The Crucial Three😁 good times. 7mo
TrishB @Vansa I think Come Back was the only other slight hit. 7mo
JillR @bookwomble @trishb mum‘s cousin was bassist Steve Currie 7mo
Bookwomble @JillR How wonderful! I can't begin to estimate the number of hours I've listened to Steve's musicianship. It's tragic that he died so young, but what an amazing legacy of joy he left us. Thank you for sharing your special claim to fame 💖 7mo
TrishB @JillR that‘s awesome ♥️ definitely a brilliant claim to fame. 7mo
Balibee146 Now have classic songs from my glory days going round in my head....this and Party Fears Two by The Associates as I always paired them on homemade mix tapes 😁 Did they used to be called something like Shambeeko (spelling?) Say Wah at first or did my brain make that up?? 7mo
TrishB @Balibee146 you have it spot on! Well remembered. 7mo
Balibee146 @TrishB lol isn't it weird the bits of detail your brain squirrels away 7mo

A very haunting, almost gothic account. The atmosphere depicted is so encompassing I really felt pulled into the author‘s despair. As a memoir, there is a struggle to reconcile with the vulnerability; a reluctance to impose thoughts on other characters and need to maintain their privacy. Occasionally the deflection into poetry seems pretentious or narcissistic, and lacks definitive conclusion. Nonetheless a beautiful and emotional book. 7/10

Well that got dark! This was so my cup of tea. Spare prose, realistic, unsettling. Loved it. My first Bainbridge, but hopefully not my last. Now I might need to try the 1988 film adaptation.

Centique I loved the movie and didnt realise it was a novel. 🙌 Thanks for putting this on my radar. 9mo
LeahBergen Yes! I did NOT see that coming. 😆 8mo

Monday #bookmail. Loved Ackerman‘s The Genius of Birds so can‘t wait to learn more about owls. And I had to order tagged after the recent rave reviews from @LeahBergen and @Tamra - sounds so good!

Aimeesue Bain ridge is EXCELLENT. So casually dark. Just, you know, evil in an offhand way. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 10mo
