More #workplacebooks. These are former workplace books. I have a law degree & used to work in law doing real estate, housing equality, & environmental law. I'm in a career transition away from law now, but I'm grateful for my experiences & use the skills I learned working in law every day. ⚖

The wine book may or may not have been frequently consulted after using the bottom 3 books. 🍷💀🍷💀🍷💀

mauveandrosysky My partner is in law school currently and this sounds really similar to what he just did for his first summer internship. He came home with so many heart-wrenching stories. 😔 8y

mauveandrosysky Metro West Legal Services — it's about 30 mins outside of Boston. Many of his clients were elderly people who were going to be evicted from their apartments which is why when you mentioned "real estate" it reminded me of it (though it may fall under a different umbrella — maybe just general housing law?) Also lots of immigrants fighting to be able to stay in the country. 8y

BookishFeminist @mauveandrosysky Yea I worked for legal aid in St Paul doing foreclosure, bankruptcy, and eviction prevention work. Also some fraudulent conveyance work because people love to take advantage of those without many resources to begin with & then have them lose their home. Many of my clients were also immigrants or disabled- heartbreaking when you just can't get the banks to work with you. 😞 8y

BookishFeminist @mauveandrosysky And yes if he did eviction & tenant cases, that's housing law. 🙂 Not strictly real estate which deals with home ownership. The difference is a bit semantic though to people outside the field. 8y

Alicia Ahh! @BookishFeminist I was a legal aid lawyer too. At DNA Peoples Legal Services on the Navajo Nation. It was so hard. Now I work for Medicaid and feel like it is the man 😞 but good for you trying a career transition! I'm looking to try something new in the next few years too...most of my #workplace books and very similar to yours... 8y

BookishFeminist @Alicia I did some volunteer stuff at one of the Ojibwe reservations in Minnesota. Really hard stuff. What did you do at legal aid? I couldn't do the conflict-laden nature of law anymore bc of my anxiety disorders so I'm hopefully switching over to more policy-driven work in social justice. I'm in DC now. No hits yet but getting there and feeling much better about this use of my degree than practicing. Good luck to you transitioning hopefully!! 8y

mauveandrosysky Ahhh, yes, that makes sense! I work in creative services so I am definitely not 100% familiar with all the specific legal terms, haha. I try to keep up though as much as I can! 😊 I do find it all pretty interesting, so that helps. 8y

BookishFeminist @mauveandrosysky Oh lord, don't worry about it I can't even keep up with legalese and I have a law degree, lmao. I used to have fun with my Black's Law Dictionary when I was frustrated and find the most ridiculous sounding legal terms I could find. 😂 8y

bookishlyblessed Man professional responsibility was the class that felt like it was used to depress and scare us future lawyers. It was like a bad worst case scenario after one another. 8y

Well-ReadNeck I remember my Black's law dictionary being about 4 inches thick and very tall and dark brown. I think I opened the thing maybe a dozen times, if that 😄 8y

Alicia @BookishFeminist good for you!!! I find that aspect of law very hard, so emotionally and mentally taxing. I did disability work- social security, food stamps, health insurance. Not too connected to the Rez but gave an extra challenge. Good luck to you in DC! 8y

EnidBiteEm Not a lawyer, but three of my best friends are. An English teacher once asked me If I wanted to be a lawyer (my essay was too short, although I'd argued my case adequately). If only she could have seen Litsy in my future 😂 In hindsight, maybe I became an English teacher to spite her? 🤔😂 8y
