LibrarianRyan @wanderinglynn My bet is this is Hoopla. Hoopla is a different type of elending libraries. Hoopla is pay for play - so a library pays an individual fee each time an item is borrowed. the library sets limits like how much they can spend in a day, (because different items are different prices), and how many a week or month per patron. This allows patrons full access to all titles.

LibrarianRyan @wanderinglynn and have access either permanently or for a metered period (dependent on publisher. Some are 52 checkouts, others are 12 months, or 24 months). But then the library only has the titles they can afford to pay for.

Most libraries that have one of these services has another as well. Hoopla is great for indies titles, as well as big name titles. Plus there are no wait lists in Hoopla. You only have a wait if you have used all 2y

LibrarianRyan @wanderinglynn if you have used all your allowable access. With other platforms they are more like in person libraries where they have so many copies and you have to wait for a copy to be available.

So yeah it has it's drawbacks, but also it's good points. I know for my library I have to get on before 10 am. The daily budget is normally spent by then so I would have to wait till the next day. 2y

LibrarianRyan @wanderinglynn Hoopla was really big about 10 years ago for audiobooks and graphic novels/comics. Then amazon bought audible and it started creating problems. Amazon signed exclusive content agreements for audible with the some of the biggest audiobook producers (most notable Blackstone Publishing) meaning those audiobooks were no longer available to libraries until the book had been out for 4-6 months, sometimes longer. Then you had Recorded ⬇ 2y

LibrarianRyan @wanderinglynn Books really want to close their loop in audiobooks and stick to the one title at a time, with a large markup. So it took a toll on Hoopla. But Hoopla did rebound and has a great niche. They don't always have all the big titles (Audible exclusivity contracts), but they still do comics and GN. Plus they collect a lot of indies (in audiobooks) and sometimes that is the only place for libraries to get those indie books. ⬇ 2y

LibrarianRyan @wanderinglynn plus for may of the big houses they rotate titles so it may be there one month, then a few months later not. They are also great for back list titles. I really like Hoopla service. And I think it is great for libraries as it opens the entire catalog to the patrons, not just to hottest books the library can afford. Plus their app works great. That's saying something for a platform that does both GN and AB. 2y

#QuotsyFeb19 Day 6: Being and feeling alive trumps looking a little bit #Lame all the time. I am not a huge John Green fan - this was one of his novels that I did not like, at all. But I do acknowledge that it could be my age. Had I read him when I was younger, perhaps I would worship the ground he walks on. As it is though, my jaded, cynical self is too impatient with broken beautiful girls needing to be rescued by dorky, semi-intellectual guys.
