Cults—religious and not—function on the foundation of specific language. Montell explains how they draw members in and keep them hooked. She also points out how MANY types of entities use this language to achieve cult-like ends—businesses, fitness companies, indeed practically any brand wanting to be the next big thing.

BarbaraTheBibliophage Montell specifically talks about SoulCycle — then I saw THIS article today. (Apologies for the paywall.) https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/05/23/peoplehood-soulcycle-relation... 2y

I hate to think of my favorite author enduring abuse at the hands of her zealot, Transcendentalist father. How could he actually believe that dark haired children were of the devil? I learned so much and it just makes me admire her even more. I can't wait to visit Orchard House.

Butterfinger @Riveted_Reader_Melissa #Nonfiction2022 #imasinner because of her father's fanatical ideas. I'm all for education reform, but he did not believe in privacy or confidentiality. 2y

This is the 3rd book in a 3 part series written as a photo elegy to the disappearing animals in East Africa. The images are beautiful and haunting, shot in black and white on medium format film in the early 00s and 2010s. Brant isn‘t just a casual observer of this environment. The intro is filled with photos of elephants that he can tell you the names of, followed by how soon after the photos were taken they were killed by poachers. 👇🏼

IndoorDame For some it was only a single day. Needless to say the intro made me cry. Some of the photos aren‘t easy to look at, but the photography is stunning, and the message is poignant. #Nonfiction2022 #ImASinner #Popsugar2022 #FeaturingAManMadeDisaster 2y
