LiterRohde @LibrarianRyan Thanks! The human body is such a scientific marvel that it is poetic. It‘s not just mechanics, it is beauty. At least that‘s what the graphic said to me! 4mo

This is my #bookgiftedtoyou pick for #booked2019. It was given to me by one of my best friend. She spoke so highly of it that I was too scared to read it for a couple of years. I'm pleased I've finally read it. I really enjoyed it. It's a beautifully-told but horrible story.
This prompt was hard for me - I either buy my own books or borrow them from the library.

A sojourn in Victorian England. The epitome of an eloquent read.

Some of our most beloved characters are the most flawed... Tyrion Lannister certainly comes to mind.
So does Pip from Dickens, Libby Day from the @thegillianflynn novel Dark Places.
📖.
But why do we love them so much? Is it because they are more relatable or because we are given the gift of urging them to become whole as we read?🌱.

#nofemmeber #screwed

This is a beautiful story that goes to some very dark places and I don‘t know if I can recommend it to anyone unless you have a lot of resilience! I‘ll explain how it fits the prompt under a spoiler tag in the comments.

Centique Do you ever read a book with a sinking feeling, a “that‘s too much, they‘re all screwed” feeling? This is one of those books for me. It starts very hopeful and light but it gets very tough. 10mo
Libby1 I agree. 10mo
Cinfhen And that cover seems so joyful and full of promise!! Thanks for the warning XX 10mo

Civil war on an island. The last white man left opens the school . He reads Great Expectations to the kids as a way to transport them off the island and allows them to get away, at least in their mind, from the dangers all around.
I wouldn‘t recommend this to everyone, as the second half is difficult . I think this is one of those that you‘d like it or hate it. I‘m in the first camp.
..these losses cannot take our minds and our imaginations....

TrishB Have this on the tbr! 12mo
Kaye I hope you like it @TrishB . The writing was wonderful, but it‘s one where you feel like a grey cloud is hanging over you, and the further you read, the darker those clouds get. It‘s really hard to recommend, as it would depend on the person. I read it in 2 sittings. Put it down halfway through and finished it tonight. It was good enough to keep reading. I wanted to know how it ended so I barreled on through. 12mo
jenniferw88 As I know you ❤ Dickens you may be interested in this book - I've just started it and am finding it really fascinating. 12mo
Kaye Thanks @jennifer88 . I‘ll take a look at it sometime. 12mo

“Mr Watts had given us kids another piece of the world. I found I could go back to it as often as I liked. What‘s more, I could pick up any moment in the story” . Beautiful little book about the power of one man, a book , and how he helped transport the kids from a place of fear and danger to a completely new world. All by opening a book.

Currently reading #greatexpectations for #litsyclassics and I‘m having quite a hard time. I‘m about 30% through and I hate Pip so much. He‘s such an unthankful, arrogant, judgemental, little prick. I know he had a hard childhood and he‘s got a crush on Estella but that‘s no reason to constantly insult Joe and Biddy and feel superior just because now he has “great expectations”. Money doesn‘t make you a good person and Pip is proof so far.

wanderinglynn I hated that book. Pip IS a little prick. I think Dickins is overrated. 14mo
LaLecture @wanderinglynn it‘s so good to hear I‘m not alone with this opinion! I loved Oliver Twist a few years ago but GE is horrible so far :/. I really wanted to like it because it‘s by the great Charles Dickens but I just can‘t. 14mo
DarcysMom I have never read anything by Dickens that I have liked. I used to feel bad about that because of his reputation, but life is too short to force yourself to read authors that make you want to poke a fork in your eye. 14mo
LaLecture @DarcysMom Well said 😂👍 14mo
