⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ love, friendship, despair and gaming. This book reminded me a lot of A Little Life, filled with complicated characters, engaging storylines but took me awhile to get through. #grammaslibrary

Sam and Sadie bond over video games as kids, have a falling out, but reconnect in college. They create a video game together and, over the course of 20 plus years, share the ups and downs of life. The story itself becomes almost like a game, as their friendship has stops and restarts. They love each other but they use each other, frustratingly don't talk about things and assume the worst. And Sadie struggles to have her contributions acknowledged.
Really enjoyed this geeky and queer romance between two middle-aged introverts just trying to be themselves, which read kind of like the inverse of the standard small town romance.
And I somehow -- okay, many graphic novels -- filled my #BookSpinBingo board during this short and exceptionally grueling month!
#BacklistReadathon : enjoyed Between Georgia by Joshilyn Jackson, DNF'd Tell the Wind and Fire by Sarah Rees Brennan
A fun romance where the meet-cute is a case of mistaken identity. I liked that the couple was in their late 40s, and that one of them is demisexual.
The characters‘ struggle with permanence, even as adults, broke my heart - it‘s almost like they use the idea of nothing ever being permanent in video games as a protective lens in experiencing life. The progression from the childish denial to the gradual acceptance of all BUT one thing in life not being temporary - death - will stay with me for some time.
I loved it. It is your typical sweet YA romance, which I'm fine with. I actually really enjoy those types of stories. I think the characters were done well. Really, there were only a few little things here and there that I thought could be done a bit better, but they are really easy to overlook.
Anda, a teen girl gamer new to an online multiplayer RPG, soon meets another player, a poor Chinese teen whose avatar‘s job is to illegally gather and sell valuable objects in the game. Anda realizes that things aren‘t always right or wrong and black or white, both in her virtual world and IRL. The artwork is great and some really good lessons for teens!
