My new #bookspin: Freedom - Jonathan Franzen & my new #doublespin: The story of Edgar Sawtelle - David Wroblewski.
Huge books and what a coincidence: They both have 562 pages exactly.
January.

Pro. Kane launched a theory of libertarianism in this book. Libertarians believe that the free will is not compatible with determinism.

Now: The Physics of Time | Richard A. Muller

I've always wondered what "time is relative" even means but never enough to look it up

And like thirty pages into this freaking book they just slap me in the face with the answer

I just-

Everything I've ever known is a lie!

Time is relative to your reference frame in the same way velocity is relative to your reference frame

Physics is nuts and I love it!

Free Will | Sam Harris

Genre: Educational

Date Started: 12/19/2019
Date Completed: 12/120/2019
How did you choose this book: Found it online, it seemed really interesting.
Write a brief summary of the novel:
The book talks about how free will is just an illusion. It talks about how, sure, you can do things consciously, but everything you do consciously is the determined by the causes that were out of your control.

Tempest Landry is mistakenly killed by police in harlem,on reaching St Peter at heaven's gates his sins are such he must go to hell, he refuses + returns to earth in new body where joshua angel has to persuade him to accept his sins to save order whilst basel bob tries to draw him to hell. Philosophical, interesting + funny a gr8 addition to 2019's rds

TrishB Sounds interesting and I‘ve not read one for this prompt yet! 4y

This is oddly philosophical. It‘s philosophical science fiction. I love it. So many interesting musings on war, on death, and now on free will.

AshleyHoss820 Have you read The Sirens of Titan? I think you‘d like that one as well! 😊 5y
Faibka I seriously loved this book because of that! Underlying the dark humor, sci-fi, war commentary there are strong philosophical and moral arguments that make you pause and think 5y
Faibka So happy that you decided to read it and are enjoying it :) 5y
GingerAntics @Faibka love a good book that gets you thinking and this one really fits that. 💙💙💙 I‘m so glad I got this book while it was on sale last month. 5y
GingerAntics @AshleyHoss820 I haven‘t, but that is also on my wish list. 5y

Though Dennett claims this is about thinking tools and discussing thinking problems ("boom crutches"), the Boston Globe is more accurate: "an excellent introduction to Dennett's body of thought." Thus, Intuition Pumps is less "how to think" and more "how to think like Dennett thinks" That being said, there are some valuable thought experiments here to get the mind going about important subjects like evolution, consciousness, and free will.
