Have you found your unique ability?

#LilithJuly Catch up from yesterday ~ went with the song lyrics. This memoir by Terese Mailhot, a gifted Indigenous writer beautifully shares her painful beginnings. Her unhealthy #foundations lead to many poor decisions and toxic relationships. Not an easy book to read but her raw honesty will blanket you.

This is an exciting sequel to Shepherd‘s Grim Lovelies that came out last year. My faulty memory does make me wish that I had re-read that one first, but there are some refreshers here, too. I love the unique magical and yet fairytale like magic of this world that mirrors ours. The very #Foundations of magic are in trouble here and Anouk is more determined than ever to master the magic that she needs to save her friends and the world! #LilithJuly

“Mr. Advocate, the rotten tree-trunk, until the very moment when the storm-blast breaks it in two, has all the appearance of might it ever had. The storm-blast whistles through the branches of the Empire even now. Listen with the ears of psychohistory, and you will hear the creaking.”

(Day 15 - #Foundations)
*This prompt made me think of A. M. Homes‘ book “Music for Torching,” because it documents the disintegration of the foundations of family and family life. Published in 2009, Homes pulls no punches in her unrelenting sabotage of life in upper middle-class, bourgeois neighborhoods. All of the scenes pictured above take place in Homes‘ scathing dismantling of American suburban values and beliefs.

This one was in my head all day and has taken me that long to find. Foundations/(building) blocks. Still not read.

#Foundations make me think of houses, and these eleven books I've read feature plots or subplots where the characters are renovating old houses. Fixing the the cracks in those foundations helps them begin to build a strong base for their relationships & their lives. 🏡

#Foundations is definitely a song about a relationship going sour, heading for a break-up...
It made me think of this super clever, unique way to tell a story of a relationship from beginning to end, through dictionary entries. (See examples ⬆️)
Told non-sequentially, it goes from heartbreaking to really funny and back again, with such beautiful use of each chosen word.
An all time favorite this one.... 💕💕💕
