#shirlitesunite Not only the name ‘Shirley‘, but ‘Wendy‘ used to be a masculine name too! 🤔

batsy Wow, that's interesting! And my first thought was did it start with Peter Pan 😁 5y
Blaire @batsy that would be interesting to know! 5y
Blaire I also wonder about ones that maintain crossover appeal. I know both male and female carrie‘s tho male usually spelled Cary. Also my name is still used by both. Even ones like Sidney and Jordan seem to be trending more female. Would love to read about why this happens. My theory would be that parents stop wanting to name boys names that become associated with women but that it doesn‘t work the other way. 5y

merelybookish Wow! So funny! I did not know this one! I always associated Wendy with Gwendolyn. Which I think is a traditional female name? 5y
merelybookish @Blaire There are few gender neutral names. Once a name is considered feminine, it's used less for boys. I think certain sounds get considered feminine too. I find it pretty fascinating. But maybe the pendulum can shift. My friend named her son Morgan after years of being told it was too feminine, but it has been decreasing in popularity for girls so she figured it would be okay. 5y
