Peyton Place | Grace Metalious

Pickpick

Managed to finish this book today. Not at all what I expected - I always assumed the secrets of Peyton Place were petty & tawdry BUT this was a whole different can of worms!!! I can imagine the scandal this book caused in the 1950s similar to the scandal To Kill A MockingBird must have caused. Fabulous characters who felt like real neighbors you‘d meet walking down Elm Street. Kudos to the author for making this book feel modern 60 years later.

Cinfhen I‘m totally up for a buddy read sequel!!! 6y
rubyslippersreads I don‘t think I‘d want any of them to be my neighbors! 😂 6y

Cinfhen Except for the kindly doctor!!! @rubyslippersreads ❤️❤️❤️ 6y
Cathythoughts Great review! Wholeheartedly agree ! Such a surprise of a book. Dealing with the most serious of issues. Brilliant writing, loved this one. ❤️ 6y
Leftcoastzen Yes,I think it kinda got a nudge and a wink reputation because it did push boundaries, but it‘s much better than its reputation would lead one to believe. 6y
kspenmoll Is this the book that was made into a soap opera? 6y
Cinfhen Yes @kspenmoll and I agree @Leftcoastzen 😃 6y
Mdargusch I‘m starting now! 6y
Bklover Still reading.....🤓 6y
Mdargusch How long did it take you to read this?!?! I‘m only on page 50 and it seems to be a slow read. 6y
emilyhaldi Sounds fun 🤗🤗 6y
Cinfhen I read it in two long sittings @Mdargusch but I found it a page turner!! (The intro was a little long and I didn‘t read the whole thing🙊) 6y
Cathythoughts @Mdargusch it took me a few days to read it ... that was quick for me ( im a very slow reader) but I found it an easy read & a page turner. It flew.... 6y
Mdargusch Well, I hope that happens for me @Cinfhen and @Cathythoughts . I didn‘t even have an intro because my copy is so old - 1965! 6y
rubyslippersreads @Mdargusch Mine doesn't have an intro either. 6y
Bklover Just finished. I can‘t even imagine the scandal this caused back in the 50‘s. !! 6y
Cinfhen Are u gonna read on @Bklover ??? I think u said I have the next book already!!! 6y
Cinfhen How are you doing with the book @Mdargusch @rubyslippersreads @CarolynM 6y
rubyslippersreads @Cinfhen I just finished and posted about it. I can see why my mom and grandma were scandalized. 😄 6y
rubyslippersreads Does anyone think the author intended that awful pun when the doctor was threatening Lucas with lynching by people who‘d never done it before? “But they‘d get the hang of it after a while.” 😂 6y
Cinfhen Oh God!!! I totally missed that reference @rubyslippersreads That‘s awful ! 6y
Mdargusch I‘m 1/4 the way through. 🤦🏼‍♀️ 6y
CarolynM I haven't read any since Sunday. A few distractions around, but I have to say I'm with @Mdargusch I 'm not finding it particularly compelling. @Cathythoughts @rubyslippersreads @Bklover (edited) 6y
Bklover @CarolynM It was interesting but not riveting. I was far more interested in trying to imagine the scandal it caused in the 50‘s. @Cinfhen I‘m happy to wait till mid September. 6y
Cinfhen I agree @Bklover imagining the uproar over this book in the 50‘s is very interesting. I think I got caught up in Selena‘s story early on and was intrigued to see how that would play out... @Mdargusch @CarolynM @rubyslippersreads 6y
Reviewsbylola I loved this one so much. I can‘t even remember why I read this one but it surprised me too. 6y
