Mehso-so

I can tell a lot of research went into this and many parts of it I found interesting and enjoyable, but there were far too many threads that were picked up with intentions that I don't feel like were tied up nicely or at all in some cases.
BUT this tells a time and place, 1950s San Francisco, and POV, Asian American lesbian, that I've yet to see put together in fiction before now.

night_shift AND this did not end on a tragic note, which is refreshing! 3y

Pickpick

I went into this not knowing much about it, just strictly on @LibrarianRyan 's recommendation. This was really cool! I called one thing pretty early on, but it didn't detract from my enjoyment of the story at all.

LibrarianRyan I‘m glad you enjoyed it. It was way different than I thought it would be but I still really liked it. 3y
night_shift @LibrarianRyan I didn't know what I was expecting, but it was definately exciting and I'm interested in seeing what the sequel brings - so thanks for the suggestion! 3y
LibrarianRyan The “crew” made such a big deal about the love triangle and picking a team Jamal or a team Julius I thought there would be more to that aspect of the book. To mean this was way more about her relationship to her father and sister than to any boy. So that surprised me. It also wasn‘t as “ghetto” as I thought it would be. You get a bit of that but apparently the first draft was darker and Rue actually had wings. I look forward to book 2 3y

night_shift @LibrarianRyan yeah, I'm not a huge fan of love triangles, so pretty happy it didn't focus on that! Maybe the wings will come in the 2nd book, that would be cool. That one death scene in the warehouse was pretty dark, but other than that. I'm curious now what was taken out! 3y
LibrarianRyan @UnidragonFrag nope. Wings not making an appearance. She didn‘t tell us much. But originally Julius was dealing and mixed up with the gang and it was a bit more violent and older YA rather than the MG-YA it currently is. Also the sister was an add in. Originally she didn‘t exist. 3y
night_shift @LibrarianRyan ah, ok, well dang! If Julius had, that would've been an interesting side plot. I can't imagine how it would be without the sister, she's pretty important to the plot. Huh! Sounds like it went through a lot of rewrite! 3y
