Deep wheel Orcadia | Harry Josephine Giles

Panpan

This Orcadian verse SFF novel with accompanying standard southern English version tells the story of a student returning to a space station from her art studies who forms a relationship with a visitor to the station.

While it was fun matching up the two versions and listening to the audiobook on Everand, there seemed to be a lot missing from the actual story which suddenly just stopped in the middle of the action. A disappointment.

This week I‘ve had the opportunity to visit a cousin who‘s been teaching in a dual language village school in Alaska for several years. She shared the essay “In Quinhagak” from this book. It details the writer‘s visit to a village where an archaeological dig is working to preserve a 500 year old village in the same area of Alaska before it‘s washed away by the sea. It was fascinating to read and see details similar to the village where she lives.

jitteryjane724 How wonderful that you could visit! What a cool experience. 3w
Daisey @jitteryjane724 It was great in so many ways! 2w

It‘s wonderful that Liptrot found a way to live her life without binge drinking self destruction&that her memoir/writing has garnered success.Yet,the first half of the book is heartbreaking&exhausting. The second half, set on the islands of Orkney, where she grew up but doesn‘t feel she really belongs&where she finds stability/some form of healing(for lack of a better word), are a fine blend of nature writing& introspection. But it was very heavy&sad.

I cant give you a photo of wild islands and massive shipwrecks but heres a yacht that ran aground locally for you! 😂
Like @Cathythoughts i saw that this is now a movie and thought i‘d read the book 💕 Amy returns to the Orkney islands as a recovering alcoholic. She explores nature while she contemplates her past life and possible future. Sometimes meditative writing can leave me cold but i just loved this.⬇️

Centique The balance of self examination, scientific tidbits and nature writing was just right. I ended up reading a chapter or two a day before sleep and it was really calming. There are some beautiful sentences in here, some simply put but profound thoughts. Definitely a case of the right book at the right time. 7mo

Centique @LeahBergen i thought it was quite handy of the guy to ground his boat in such a picturesque way! (Apparently he was being a pillock at the time so we dont have to feel too sorry for him!) 7mo

Another island story. Orkney. I saw that Saoirse Ronan will play the lead in the movie of The Outrun, so I wanted to read the book. I loved the island setting, the wild unforgiving and beautiful landscape, the cliffs , and the basic close to the earth lives the islanders live.
I‘m looking so forward to the movie now.

andrew61 I read the book years ago, Cathy, and have recently seen the film. It is an excellent film and saioirsie ronan is incredible although as you can imagine tough watch at times. My wife, who hadn't read it, also loved it. 8mo
Anna40 Is it a memoir? Sounds wonderful. 8mo

I completely understand why this was nominated for the women‘s prize for non-fiction. Masud weaves her stories of life searching the countryside in England with her memories from her traumatic childhood in Pakistan.
