The Bitter Orange Tree | Jokha Alharthi
post image
Mehso-so

A story about Zuhour, her relationship with Bint Aamirs. Story goes from past to present to see how Zuhour will adapt her life in Britain. During the past narrative you will see their cultural roots. The story has many beautiful passages but I was sometimes confused which character was narrating. I found loose beautiful parts without connection. Maybe a re-read will help me to understand it better. 3⭐️

Gissy I still want to read her novel Celestial Bodies.

A couple drama, how Avery and Ellen marriage will be affected after a third person arrived to their lives. It is about infidelity, betrayals but also about second chances to yourself, about friends support. I love that ending, a new perspective, a new start. My first novel by this author and I loved the writing style. I was focused in the story, in the dynamic of all these characters, expecting what would be their decisions. Couldn‘t put it down.

2nd book in the series. I expected more from this book but in general I liked it not loved it. DeMarco will take some leave with Jayme. He is still managing what happened in the first book (no spoiler) and is considering retirement. But during this leave, he is asked to resolved a cold case: 7 young girls were murdered one each year, only their bones were found and the apparently responsible wasn‘t incarcerated or maybe was someone else. ⬇️

Gissy In this book DeMarco is in a constant introspection about his past and what he wants for his near future. You have to be attentive to those first pages velvety related with some of the actions during the book. Interesting what happened between the psychologist and DeMarco. 3.5⭐️I‘m still want to know what is going to happen next.

Tangerine: A Novel | Christine Mangan

Pickpick

I‘m always late but this is the first book read during #AwesomeAugust Readathon @Andrew65
Mixed feelings with this novel. Alice married John without knowing him well and moved with him to Tangier, a convenient marriage for John. But Alice is not adapting well to this new life. Then a supposedly friend, uninvited, arrived to visit Alice. Something happened between Alice and Lucy when they were in college. Lucy seems obsessed with Alice⬇️

Gissy What happened during that time? Who is this Lucy? The novel goes from the past during Alice and Lucy college time to the present. You are not going to like any of these characters. Betrayal all the time. That aunt is terrible. The end is a twist that most people are not going to like at all. You can feel desperate with Alice poor judgement. But I liked how characters were developed and with the descriptions, you can feel you are in Tangier.3⭐️ 2y

Mixed feelings. I liked the writing style and story. It started so well. But then in the middle of the story some parts were like disconnected, loose descriptions without adding depth to the story. Then, those final chapters were so good connecting the characters with the house. Are we expecting a sequel? So gothic. Olivia is in a birding school with no family. But then, one day she received a letter from an unknown uncle.⬇️

Gissy “You are wanted. You are needed. You belong to us. Come home dear niece”. Who is this uncle? What is Gallant? Every house has secrets, what are the secrets of this house? Olivia Olivia Olivia.

This story is set in 1691 and it was inspired about what happened during the Salem witch hunt. It is a sad story but so well described how dangerous, terrible was this collective hysteria.
Slow read to me t due to the writing style but it was so interesting and the story motivates to seek more information about this period of time.

2nd book in this trilogy. I liked this world of necromancy. In this book Tea continue her journey to find her friend‘s heartglass (no spoiler). This trilogy is so gloomy. Almost every story and journey is so sad. There are no many fun or happy scenes but I‘m still want to know what will happen with these characters, specially with Tea. 3.8⭐️

This was a cute YA romance. Probably it should be rated as so-so but I found some part lovely but it is cheesy and very YA. What I liked was how Kimi, a Japanese American, tried to find her roots during her travel to Japan. Lovely relation with her grandparents and beautiful relation with her mother. I also found myself looking for some places, food and items they mentioned as part of the culture. 3⭐️

As expected in most of Short Story Collection, I liked some short stories more than the others but I found that the ends in these stories were rushed and inconclusive. Well, maybe I should say that I‘m not so fan of short stories in general but I keep trying them. 3⭐️But I like that cover ❤️
