While this book is beautifully written and poetic I just couldn‘t connect with it, for a book about grief it failed to even make me a little sad.

I liked the idea that the story was told through a series of items that were white but I object to the amount of blank pages in the print addition yes I am sure they have a deeper meaning but I just kept thinking of the trees.

Unique but not for me.

4⭐️
I am glad this was selected for the MBI short list as I would never have picked it up otherwise. The blurb sounds like the kind of book I would hate and the cover just doesn‘t do it for me but once inside the pages it is a different story.

I enjoyed the narrative structure each chapter switches to the viewpoint of a new character with a loose connection to Vernon or Alex and starts further in the future than the previous one 👇

BookwormM It then works its way back in time to where the previous chapter left off. I enjoyed most of the characters and enjoyed the diversity in the novel we have porn stars, Muslims, single fathers, LGBTs, street people and rock stars. To keep the balance we also have the less savoury wife beaters, misogynists and extreme right wingers. A clever story where you are never sure of the authors actual beliefs. Looking forward to part 2 6y
BarbaraBB Great review, makes me stack it! 6y

#MBI2018 now onto the side of the book I don‘t like the misogynistic views of women and this is just one example of many. Not sure if as a female author is this how is how she thinks men think or if there is a larger point to the use of language...

Had to be prudent 💸 These are the books that came home with me. Virginie Despentes has become an auto-buy for me and she's on the #MBI2018 longlist. I was also waiting for an affordable paperback of the Zinzi Clemmons and was very pleased to see this 😍

Cathythoughts I‘ve never ever heard of Virginie Despentes. But if she is an auto buy for you @batsy Well , enough said, stacking , with intention to buy very soon .... 6y
Kalalalatja Love those covers! 6y
Billypar @Cathythoughts Sound logic! 6y

batsy @Cathythoughts @Billypar 😁❤️ Would love to know what you delightful people think of her work if you give it a try! 6y
Cathythoughts @billypar curiosity got the better of me & I got Vernon Subutex on my kindle. The writing is compelling & I don‘t even know why , only that I want to keep on reading .... @batsy 6y
batsy @Cathythoughts I'm glad to hear that! I haven't started yet 😆 I love how when a book interests you, you just start reading it. I should learn to do that. That will solve my TBR problem a fraction... 6y
sisilia Stacked! @batsy My TBR is just getting longerrrrrrr 6y
batsy @sisilia Glad to be of help? 😆😘 6y

The books I'm most interested in reading from the Man Booker International longlist. Should be totally doable 🤣 #MightBeLuckyToReadOne

Centique Oh man that‘s a lot! I‘m still reading books from 2002 or so, so let me know how 2018 goes! 😊✌️ 6y
batsy @Centique Hahaha! Just planning my 2018 reads for 2028 😂 6y
sisilia Go Went Gone sounds promising 6y

batsy @sisilia Yes! Interesting premise and I've been meaning to read her earlier books. 6y
BiblioLitten Frankenstein in Baghdad for me! 6y
Simona I liked Vegetarian, but from this year‘s list I‘m least interesting in White Book ... 6y
batsy @BiblioLitten I'm excited about that one! 6y
batsy @Simona I was also on the fence, but was persuaded by a review by Deborah Levy in the Guardian 🙂 6y
BarbaraBB Good to know that you made a selection I can follow :) I have heard good things about the Binet! 6y
Bertha_Mason I'm really excited for Frankenstein in Baghdad myself. ☺ 6y
Simona Indeed, very praising review ... I‘m definitely going to read this one as Levy put it - ‘secular prayer book‘. Thanks for mentioning this review 🙏 6y
batsy @BarbaraBB 😆 I guarantee that you will be the one to read all of these and I will be following your reviews to see which ones I can read next year 😂 6y
batsy @Bertha_Mason It sounds very promising; I have high hopes :) 6y
batsy @Simona You're welcome! It's such a lovely review, it made me want to read it. 6y
BarbaraBB Oh no, I can‘t manage more books on my TBR 😀 6y
AnneCecilie I find "Go, Went, Gone" and "Vernon Subutex" really interesting. Probably won't get to them until this summer. I read Jenny Erpenbeck's "End of Days" just last month and really loved it. 6y
LeahBergen My brain instantly went to Crime and Punishment when it registered the axe in this photo. 😂😂 I‘m Dostoevsky-ed! 6y
Moray_Reads @LeahBergen me too! I thought the White Book was beautifully intricate but I haven't read any of the others! 6y
batsy @AnneCecilie That's good to know about Erpenbeck :) Despentes has become a kind of auto-buy author for me. 6y
batsy @LeahBergen Me too! There's another cover for this book but I went with axe because Dostoyevsky-ed 😂 6y
batsy @Moray_Reads Glad to know that you read White Book and liked it! It's an intriguing concept. 6y
Faibka @batsy @Simona @Moray_Reads that‘s why I love Litsy, now I‘m very intrigued about this book and adding it to tbr. I‘m also reading Levy‘s review, thank you so much! 6y
batsy @Faibka My pleasure! The joy of Litsy, being exposed to so many books 🤩 6y
ValerieAndBooks I‘m with @LeahBergen about the upper left book — immediately thought of Crime and Punishment 😆!! 6y
saresmoore I missed this post AND the MB Int‘l Longlist! I want to read all of these very much. 6y
