Day 11 - #KeenKarma #LadderToTheSky #JohnBoyne #AugustABC

Karma gets him in the end:
Maurice has had a taste of literary fame, he knows he can stop at nothing in pursuit of that high. From the Amalfi Coast, where he matches wits with Gore Vidal, to Manhattan & London, Maurice hones his talent for deceit & manipulation, preying on the talented & vulnerable in his cold-blooded climb to the top. But the higher he climbs, the further he has to fall…

A marvellous novel about writing, ambition and betrayal, with some lovely vignettes of literary giants strewn along the way. One of the most entertaining book I have read this year. Cyril Avery is not a real Avery and he never will be. then who is he? Boyne's story is a sweeping, heartfelt saga of one man's life from the 1940's to today and told through the eyes of Cyril Avery. close relationship with Julian Woodbead and will spend a lifetime coming to know himself. I found this book to be entertaining, funny and clever. recommend this book to those who love to read about Ireland. look forward to reading more by Boyne.

Reviewsbylola This was my gateway Boyne. Such a good book. 9mo

😍❤️😍❤️ LOVE THIS BOOK❤️😍❤️😍

This book - wow! Incredible characters and a smart, funny, yet heartbreaking story. What‘s not to love?? This author‘s writing reminds me of John Irving‘s earlier works, which makes sense considering he dedicated the book to Irving. I highly recommend this to literary fiction fans!

A wild ride of literary ambition. I just adored this book! I keep typing and erasing sentences because I don't want to give anything away but I want you to pick up this book if you haven't already!! Manipulation, surprises, history, modern day, literary/bookish scenes abound. Just excellent. This man is fabulous #johnboyne -- I am reading more of your books!!! Recommended 🌟

Reading this book is like watching the most horrifying car wreck imaginable — I cannot believe the depths the main character is willing to sink to. But it‘s also such an entertaining read. Can‘t put it down!

When the disdain has made it into the dialogue of new novels .... 😂

BTW, A Ladder to the Sky was a an excellent book. I loathed the main character but the story is so good and keeps you moving along. It's worth hating him so much, haha.

Maurice Swift has my vote for one of the most ruthless men in literature. He will stop at nothing in order to get a published novel even though he doesn't have an original plot idea. He manages a story that puts him at the top. Matter of ethics will keep the pages turning. Boynes‘ writing flows easy and makes for a quick book. Read A Ladder to the Sky. You will not be disappointed. Thanks to NetGalley and Hogarth Pub for copy for honest review.

Andrew65 They will love your review, which is fully deserved. A wonderful book. 12mo

KatieDid927 It‘s been a really slow start for me with this one, it just has NOT grabbed me yet, but all the positive reviews has me pushing through! 12mo
EadieB @KatieDid927 Sometimes it takes a good bit before a book kicks in. I hang in if I know others enjoyed it. I‘m reading Circe right now which everyone really enjoyed but that genre really is not a favorite of mine. Give me a gory mystery thriller and I am very happy. I will stick with Circe because of the Buddy Read and hope it gets more interesting for me. I‘m also having the same problem with Transcription by Kate Atkinson. 12mo
KatieDid927 @EadieB Thanks! I really liked Circe a lot. It is also my kind of thing though. Admittedly it does start out slow too. 12mo
