Pride and Prejudice | Jane Austen

#Gossip is one of the most popular #hobbies in Jane Austen‘s books, sometimes engaged in over #embroidery. Whether it‘s who has moved from #city to #country, the cost of #conveyances and #houses, or whose #children are #dancing with whom at #balls, many a #friendship includes making sport of one‘s neighbours.

#200PNPcovers (I decided to catch up all in one post. 😊)

LeahBergen Haha! You‘re GOOD. 😆 2y

#200PnPcovers @CrowCAH @mabell #conveyances My mind went to the scandalous carriage ride that Willoughby and Marianne went on where they ended up disappearing together (without a chaperone) and heading to his future house…Surely such a familiar ride and destination must mean they‘re engaged, no?

mabell Perfect! 👏👏👏 2y
CrowCAH Me would think… What a scandalous ride! 2y

Day 5. Conveyances. Specifically, carriages. Here Elizabeth along with Mr. Lucas and Maria are heading back to Longbourn after their visit with Charlotte and Mr. Collins.

mabell Rather a lonely (even though she isn‘t alone) carriage ride for Elizabeth! 2y
CrowCAH @mabell yes, especially on the way back when all were silent with their recollections of their visit. 2y

Not the usual type of #conveyances, but they do convey hay!

‘Horsemen and footmen, carriages of every description and every shape, waggons and carts and covered carts, stagecoaches… coaches, chariots, chaises, gigs, buggies, curricles and phaetons; the sound of their wheels ploughing through the wet gravel was as continuous and incessant as the roar of waves on the sea beach.‘

There are a few scenes in Austen‘s works that involve the main character and #Conveyances , or I like to think of them as “ominous carriage rides.” In Northanger Abbey, Mr Thorpe is rather devious, and he and his sister practically kidnap Catherine and take her on a very awkward carriage ride (she begins to realize these people are not her friends by this time). ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Librarybelle While the tagged book does not explicitly describe the scene in question, it does explore themes in each of Austen‘s works (for instance, Mr. Thorpe‘s love for hunting and driving). Plus, there are objects in envelopes that readers can explore Austen‘s thoughts through letters. Another fun way to dive into Austen! #200PnPCovers 2y
mabell Oh I love books like this! (The Jolly Postman is one of my all time favorites) And I get mad just thinking about that carriage ride! 😆 2y
CrowCAH Looks like a fun book for any Austen enthusiast! 2y
