I wanted to read this because of all that was said about it in Mary Rubio's bio of LM Montgomery. The critics in the late 1920s said Jalna was an example of the way forward for Canadian literature, with Montgomery's books being relegated to children's books exclusively. I started this with a feeling of loyalty towards LMM and wanted to hate it, but I didn't. It had some moments/lines that didn't age well, but that's true for most books from 1927.
My first Margaret Atwood book 📖
Zsuzsi Gartner, author of the story collection with the excellent title “Better Living Through Plastic Explosives“, has published a debut novel with a narrator that we see too little of. Lucy, a professional & a mother who does not feel guilt about the feelings she has towards her daughter who now lives with her ex-husband. Since the death of her cousin, & best friend, Zoltan the narrator has become a magnet for the off-beat & occasionally (CONT)
I enjoyed this curiosity, found it wonderfully done, found the writing, which focuses so much on the sound, always interesting and terrific, with its own rhythm and life. And I say this even I didn't really get it. (I missed a lot, as I discovered afterwards reading online reviews) This maybe should have won the Booker (and I loved the winner, Prophet Song)
Quite a chilling tale of a possible future dystopia from the viewpoint of a handmaid, Offred (belonging to Fred). Womens rights are greatly restricted and some men are in total control. I haven't seen the movie or the TV series but I have looked at the recent graphic novel. I recommend it for open-minded adults or older teens. Reminds me of 1984 a bit.
Reading this as a girl I remember being charmed by the idea of having lots of kids, but now I just kept thinking 6 children is WAY too many children 😂
