It‘s a tough book to review; probably because it is an Ozeki! I want to challenge myself to write a post as if I was the judge writing to defend why this book over another in TOB style; and that other book is one not in the upcoming tourney but was on the long list: Cloud Cuckoo Land. A few similar themes but wildly not, as well. First, tho, gotta pie 😉

sarahbarnes I had trouble articulating my thoughts on this one, too. I thought it was interesting and creative…but I didn‘t LOVE it. It also felt a little long. 2y

This had a slow build to a five slicer rating but I was enthralled and extremely pleased with the experience of reading this by the end, including through the acknowledgements. I loved thinking about what inspired Walter to research this, curious about his thoughts and creative process. My esteem for this author continues on a logarithmic scale! (LOL debating with husband how to spell that 🤣) History, strong female characters, empathy, craft. 👏

Amy_S My dad borrowed this through the Libby app we both share & I returned it early thinking it was my borrow! It was so thrilling to discover a non-sci-fi book we overlapped on! (and that he really enjoyed!) 3y

So, I attempted to add txt to my image but couldn‘t figure out how to move or increase font size, ... but can anyone tell me how to access my bookmarks when reading on the iPad Kindle app? Crazy question but I can‘t figure it out... seems like it should be the only thing I would/should want to see so why are they hiding this? Ugh.

AvidReader25 There were so many different storylines in this one that I had a hard time following it at times. 5y

BkClubCare It is best to read in one sitting. I put it down for a few days and just couldn‘t reconnect to the characters = frustration! 5y

BkClubCare Did I like this book? I think so yes. Three to 3 & 1/2? It will make one squirm - it is uncomfortable and has slimey conflicted characters. And the kid was the worst of all very closely followed by the mother. That probably isn‘t a spoiler, is it? 5y
