One day, a cataclysmic event occurs: all of the white people in America walk into the nearest body of water. A year later, Charlie Brunton is a Black man living in an entirely new world. Having served his time in prison for a wrongful conviction, he‘s now a professor of electric and solar power systems at Howard University.

The simple concept in this ghostly novel - getting stuck in a liminal space between life and death - was evoked in such perfect, creepy detail that it kept me engaged even as the plot crawled along slowly for the first 2/3 of the novel. It reminded me of those days where everything feels a little surreal and dreamlike for reasons that are hard to describe. Not the outright scary Halloween read I was hoping for, but great atmosphere and characters.

Ruthiella She‘s been on my TBR for forever. I need to put a title on my #Roll100 list for 2026 so I can make that happen! 1w
Billypar @Ruthiella This was the first of hers for me. I wanted to read The Reformatory, but like so many of my reading decisions, I went with the shorter choice 🙂 1w
Reggie I thought this was great. My favorite of hers is The Good House. 1w
Billypar @Reggie I just looked that up, and I guess I added it to my TBR at some point. I love a good haunted house story - I'll have to check it out. 6d

And Still I Rise: Black America Since MLK | Henry Louis Gates, Kevin M Burke

#wdncw when we say that Mamdani‘s win last night was amazing to see. My 21 year old & I had talked about him a few months ago. Mamdani & candidates like him are the future. The younger generation like my son are excited about candidates like Mamdani. They want to see someone who addresses their concerns: affordability, supporting immigrant & LGBTQ+ communities, supporting women, taxing the rich, protecting the environment. They believe in social

ncsufoxes justice. The polls showed that young women & men voted primarily democratic last night. They know they don‘t want to live in the current system. My son is much more politically aware than I ever was at his age. I‘m here for shaking up the system. I‘m here for a more just society. I listened to Mamdani speak a few months ago & I was intrigued. His background in social justice & connection to MLK, Jr is inspiring for the next generation. 2w
dabbe @ncsufoxes Goosebumps reading this. I think it's safe to say that we can hand the reigns to your son and his generation and hope that they do a much better job than we did. 💙✊🏻💙 2w
Sparklemn I believe that Gen Z are going to change the world for the better. So amazing to see the engagement. (edited) 2w

ncsufoxes In case you haven‘t seen this speech, this was how I became aware of Mamdani. https://youtu.be/Y0b-YwxhOaQ He‘s speaking at a Baptist church about his dad‘s involvement in SNCC. (edited) 2w

"I don't know what's gonna happen tomorrow. But I am here, so I might as well fucking enjoy it, and help my community if I can"

Words to live by!! Miss Major passed away last month. She was an inspiration as she says many times here, not many Black Trans people get to live to be in their 80s, what an amazing life she has had. Not easy, but amazing. I like how she spoke of Trans rights reminding us to be good allies by not assuming ?

ChaoticMissAdventures What the community needs, or deciding as allies what we think they deserve (a sentiment shared by Chef Jose Andres') She talks about Stonewall, police violence, how the Gay community tries to erase the Trans community, she talks about Palestine and a host of other topics and her insights are invaluable. 4.5/5⭐ #nonfictionnovember 2w
Bookwomble I really loved getting Miss Major's perspectives through this book. Sorry to hear she's passed away. Rest in Power ✊🏾🏳️‍⚧️✊🏾 2w

Incredible. In this novel, we are plunged into a world in which all the white people in America are gone and the ones who are left - focus on the black and biracial MCs- have the opportunity to center themselves and in a new world and examine their identity, their heritage and generational trauma and what this new future could bring. I‘ll be thinking about this for a long time and I hope the rest of the book group feels the same!

Julsmarshall I loved this book too! 2w
Sarahreadstoomuch @Julsmarshall yay! And maybe I missed it, but I feel like this has flown under the radar. 2w
Julsmarshall I agree! And the only reason it was on my radar was because I happened upon the author at the Texas Book Festival last year. Which is actually going on this weekend and I‘ll be there tomorrow:) 1w

"It's like being on a road, it doesn't matter if it's the yellow brick road, or pavement, or gravel. It's still a road and where it takes you is where you're going. And I think the journey is how you use that road- if you stay on it and the path that it's leading you down, or you venture off and do something else and create a path of your own."

#NonfictionNovember is here!
#WeeklyForecast

I am halfway into the tagged would like to finish tomorrow.
I am planning on reading one chapter from Far From The Tree a day, there are 12 chapters but I am looking realistically at a full 2 weeks I understand it is a dense one.

Supplementing with the brilliant Ta-Nehisi Coates and the inspiring Jacinda Ardern

ncsufoxes The Message was really good. I‘ve had Far From the Tree sitting on my shelf for years. I need to finally read it. I‘ve read lots of books about disability & mental health but this is one that I have not tackled yet. 2w
ChaoticMissAdventures @ncsufoxes it's a pretty intimidating chunckster. But I am 50 pages in and it is easily digestible. Many people here really love it. 2w

Hilton cheated death as a child, and now he is worries that death is coming to take what is owed. It was a low pick, I loved the concept, but didn't completely hold my attention. Seeing how this is her debut, I look forward to reading more from Due.

Reggie I love this book and her so much. The Good House is in my top 10 books. The Reformatory is also amazing in a really dark way. So good. 2w
Billypar I'm reading this now! I just crossed the halfway point, and I like it but also hoping the pace picks up a bit. 2w
