Pauli Murray: Trained as a lawyer her research and paper for a class her senior year provided a springboard for Thurgood Marshall‘s and the NAACP‘s civil rights litigation. A paper she co-wrote in the 1960s provided one leg of Ruth Bader Ginsberg‘s litigation on behalf of women‘s rights. She served on JFKs Presidential Commission on the Status of women and also helped found NOW. First black Episcopal priest in the U.S.

Spent my day off home sick, again. But I used the time to finish this book! Intended to be a coauthored memoir, Edie Windsor died before completion, leaving Joshua Lyon to figure out how to finish when her voice was so specific. His solution: to wrap up chapters in his own voice & with interviews with those who knew her. An interesting way of giving context to a fascinating woman‘s life.

2. I find myself crying, thankful that this account exist so that I could bear witness to such a lovely, long-lasting relationship.

I had never heard of Edie Windsor before her landmark Supreme Court case. A case that was being argued on March 27, 2013 as @BookishMarginalia and I were getting married in New York City‘s Carl Schurz Park. ⬇️

Day 19 - #Flying #QuotsyAugust19

I really like eva dolan and her police procedural novels repeatedly touch on current issues such as migrant workers + far right politics so a stand alone was intriguing and didn't disappoint. Here 2 v different women at the heart of a protest against gentrification of a high rise London block of flats confront a dead body. The book then seperates with their tales taking different time lines to a satisfying end. Role on her next book.
