Sexual Politics
Sexual Politics | Kate Millett
3 posts | 3 read | 24 to read
A sensation upon its publication in 1970, Sexual Politics documents the subjugation of women in great literature and art. Beginning in 1830 and targeting four revered authorsD. H. Lawrence, Henry Miller, Norman Mailer, and Jean GenetKate Millett builds a damning profile of literatures patriarchal myths and their extension into psychology, philosophy, and politics. Her eloquence and popular examples taught a generation to recognize inequities masquerading as nature and proved the value of feminist critique in all facets of life. This new edition features Catharine A. Mackinnon (University of Michigan Law School) and New Yorker correspondent Rebecca Mead on the importance of Milletts work to challenging the complacency currently sidelining feminism.

Kate Millet died of heart complications at 82. Minnesota grows and educates a hardy stock of feminists. 🙇🏻‍♀️😓Sexual Politics was her thesis.

BookishFeminist I was heartbroken to hear this the other night. Going to miss her a lot. 7y
chapter_fifty2017 In the early 90's i returned to study as a mature aged student was lucky enough to do a womens studies course where we studied the greats Kate Millet was one of them so sad. 7y
Aleida I, too, was a mature student and a women's studies minor during the same time as you @chapter_fifty2017 I think it's a age to study gender issues as we've probably seen and/or experienced much. I also feel strongly that gender studies should begin in grade school before children are anesthesized by constant gender stereotyping and behavior. 7y
chapter_fifty2017 I so agree but i remember that was the last year they were offering woman studies as its own subject in that certificate year , a tragedy i thought at the time , as with all the arts slashed and combined with other subjects .So much silenced from slashing that one subject . I remember at the time we wanted to protest ! And take it to the streets so empowered were we from these writings . 7y
Aleida Yes, let's cut a department that studies over half the world's population. Sounds insignificant. 7y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Great ad, and so sad to hear of her passing. 7y
batsy RIP. This one is shamefully still unread by me. 7y
merelybookish @Riveted_Reader_Melissa It sounds like it was unexpected. She was in Paris celebrating her birthday. 🙁 @batsy I don't think I've read it either - maybe just an excerpt in a class once. 7y

Happy 82nd bday to Kate Millett! She's a feminist writer, activist, & artist. She identifies as bisexual & has bipolar disorder, so much of her advocacy focuses on sexuality, sexual identity, & mental health. Her book Sexual Politics is a defining text on feminist sexual theory—it was her PhD dissertation at Columbia Univ.—& has led to a wider acceptance of legal abortion & sexual freedom. Super power: her side eye can shatter the patriarchy. 👊🏼
